tepista wrote:So the first night we get wasted before the show, and I plan to buy more booze inside but they sell tequila ONLY ON ICE. They have tequila, they have cups, but I cant have tequila in a cup unless the cup is full of ice cubes. So that was the only thing that went wrong, other than Bob Dylan's horrible set. I realized that once I got through the metal detector, they didn't pat me down, so the second night I filled a water bottle with booze and let it bulge out of my pocket, knowing they weren't gonna pat me. Even though the two tornado chicks we went with (besides Karen) got cigarettes taken away, and maybe pot too, I don't know. That's what they get for acting like tornadoes. Well, back to night one, the STONES killed it. Sweet Virginia, are you kidding me? Live With Me? I was dyin of awesomeness. Wife never seen Stones, she was blown away too. Night 2 with booze in hand, Neil Young was fucking great with a 20 minute Cowgirl in the Sand-Jam, then Macca with a 3 hour 38 song set! Neil joined him for vox on A Day in the Life. I had a joke all set up to send to my friend whom I always complain about setlists to, I was gonna say "McCartney sucked, he didn't even play "Something"" but goddammit, then he did! Ihad to taper off the alc/narc intake on day 3, but still did a little of everything. That day we went early to see the photo exhibit, but the line was like 400 people deep, when suddenly some people that knew Karen gave us cuts, only about 20 sopts from the entrance. It was that kind of trip, everything happened perfectly (except that goddamn tequila on ice thing), we even had near magical parking luck as well. The the Who was very very good, we argued about Pink Floyd the whole week and finally agreed that we'd watch half of them then beat the traffic. About 40 minutes in she had to pee and there's no way we were gonna navigate back to seats after that, so hit the road, got back to LA about 1AM. Wonderful trip, one of the best vacays ever.
Coworkers were baffled by him as well. I saw Dylan in 2004 and it was...well, I was glad I can say I saw him.

Hey Flex, what do Dylanphiles think of his live performances? I'm thinking it might just be something non mega fans don't get. He's been playing 100 shows a year since like 88, so either he loves to play or he has a lot of bills to pay.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I think the general consensus is that he's gotten a pretty tight live show together these days, but that some years are better than others.

He's not going to pander at all, and he plays tons of new stuff usually (the Desert Trip shows were anomalous in terms of how much he played old material. I assume that was some sort of contractual agreement). If you're bought into latter day Dylan records, you'll probably like what he's doing live.

I like that he absolutely does not give a fuck about providing a nostalgia experience, even at an event like Desert Trip.

I'm gonna go when he comes to Denver. He impressed he hell out of me at Desert Trip. Hope he keeps on with the Animals-heavy setlists.

I watched The Who live in Hyde Park film on recent flight. I enjoyed it thought they were great. And Zac Starkey is a great drummer.

Absolutely agree although Pete is saying he doesn't like playing live these days he still gives a 100% as he is such a natural live performer. You won't get fooled at a Who gig. ;)

That statement alone tells me all I need to know. My work has finished early for the day, thank you. I bet you'll be retracting that before the days out. ;)
