Being a millionaire doesn't mean you suck, or that you're an awful person. Same way as being flat out broke doesn't mean you're great or noble. Same goes for everyone in between. (I still think Joel is lame).Silent Majority wrote: ↑09 Apr 2018, 7:54pmNow that I've mustered a weak defense of a millionaire, my work here is done for the day. Good night everybody!

I’ll be honest, I’d rather hear Billy Joel than solo Sting.
For me it goes: Police > Billy Joel > Attila (Billy’s laughably terrible “hard rock” band > A dental drill in my eardrum without anesthesia > Solo Sting

I’ve always thought Stink poops like little rabbit poos. This thought has evolved to a vision of him saving these poops to heat his bog house in winter months despite the irritation it causes neighbors.

Re: The Mighty Musical Observations Thread
Going from The Police to solo Sting has to be one of the most massive swings in music quality that I can think of.

If it's a history prof, I bet he played "Russians" and "We Didn't Start the Fire." Because, you know, those songs teach history.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑09 Apr 2018, 5:49pmHad a student chat with me today, and in passing he mentioned that another history prof played Sting and Billy Joel before a couple of his lectures. I couldn't mask my horror. I can't conceive of an acceptable circumstance for playing Billy Joel in a class, except, I dunno, a history of the apocalypse. Sting is only marginally more acceptable.

Agreed. And on the same note, "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" is immense when sung by Ronnie Spector. But otherwise, he's awful.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑09 Apr 2018, 6:46pmIt is very much up for debate, Criscuola. The closest thing I'll say to agreeing is that "Just the Way You Are" could be okay if covered by someone else. But otherwise, he's fucking dreck.

That's an intriguing topic and I'm gonna muse on that for a bit. As chequered as the solo Beatles catalogue is, I don't think any of them feel as far as Sting.

Re: The Mighty Musical Observations Thread
My first two musical obsessions were Billy Joel and the Beach Boys. BJ came into my world with We Didn't Start the Fire when I was about six. I'm sure my stupid boomer parents were part of that. Storm Front and GH 1&2 were two big albums for lil Hoy.
Listening today, a lot of sounds dated. He does have a knack for a good melody - "You May Be Right", "Only the Good Die Young" and those songs have held up better. It's all pretty inoffensive and that lack of edge certainly doesn't help overcome how dated some of it is and in particular, his fairly mediocre voice. All in all, I can't hate the guy, but there's probably only a handful of songs that I can still stand behind.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I think Stings first solo album is not that a massive swing. But after that things change.
