For reals, though, I'll second the Ted Nugent vote above, along with guys like Toby Kieth, Brad Paisley, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, etc.

Heroin helps one like jazz. Unfortunately that is just about all heroin helps. */**Kory wrote: ↑27 Apr 2018, 3:27pmJazz cannot be forced. *I like jazz quite a bit but really need to hear it live to get full enjoyment.

And yes, we DID get into an actual argument the other day because I said that Billy Joel sucks and he replied, "well, he's better than Kate Bush" which is obviously WRONG, but again, whaddya gonna do? And sure, we also got into an argument once because I said I'd rather sleep with Steve Buscemi than Mark Wahlberg and he didn't believe me, but, you know, such is life in marriage.
This is why I am trying to break the cycle by brainwashing our son.

I've tried to get into the Dead but like you, it just doesn't stick. I've tried to put my finger on it & the best reasonable explanation I can come up with is that it's lazy music. More specifically, music by lazy people.WestwayKid wrote: ↑27 Apr 2018, 3:20pmJam bands are very low on my list. I did give the Dead a chance back in 2015 - it was there 50th anniversary or something and one of my friends - a very dedicated Deadhead - gave me a couple of boots. They were not as awful as I thought they might be - but it just didn't stick.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑27 Apr 2018, 2:53pmGrateful Dead, Phish (sorry, revbob), and any other band whose songs are anywhere from 3 to 58 hours long.

My name is 101Walterton and I don’t like Jazz. Actually it is more that I find it annoying. To me it sounds like a never ending intro waiting for the song to start or a never ending song.
Having said that there are things I dislike more like Lycra wearing screeching Metal and country.

The only Jazz song I like is Jimmy Jazz
Billy Joel is ten times better than Kate Bush
I don't really like the Blues, that Clapton-style wanking.

You subconsciously like quite a bit of jazz. It's as broad and diverse as "rock".
Kate Bush is The Goddess. Billy Joel is Her eunuch man-servant.
So Clapton is what you think of when you hear the term "blues"? What are you, a northern Brit?

Team BJ here.
I don't think anything's really a deal-breaker or anything. I mean, if I don't like it, it's just not for me. It's cool people dig whatever — though I might think lesser of them if they're Heston.

Don’t give a shit. Musical taste has nothing to fo with character.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

Seriously. I know a lot of people who share my taste who are absolute trash.

It's a nice sentiment, but it's too sweeping, I think. As an example, do you think someone who listens primarily to Nazi punk could also be a decent person?

Radiohead AKA the Pink Floyd of the 90s.
Re: Is any music/band a deal breaker for you?
This probably the one example where there would be a serious problem, this is beyond music this is ideology.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑28 Apr 2018, 10:06amIt's a nice sentiment, but it's too sweeping, I think. But in general I know and respect way too many people who enjoy music I can't stand. So big picture no but if the first time I meet you you start raving about how great Phil Collins is then that will be an obstacle to overcome
Re: Is any music/band a deal breaker for you?
That’s an extreme outlier. The interest in Nazi music is driven by the interest in the ideology. That’s also a tiny minority of music and not really the grounds of the conversation given WK’s example of jazz, which is a major genre. So yeah, you can make that objection, but it doesn’t have all that much force.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑28 Apr 2018, 10:06amIt's a nice sentiment, but it's too sweeping, I think. I am arguing that liking Wire is no indicator that someone is a good person, nor that being a Billy Joel listener is a predictor for bad behavior. By way of example, consider how upset people were that David Cameron loves the Smiths, or that Paul Ryan is a Rage Against the Machine listener (although I think they kinda blow but that’s me).
When I was a teenager I usually made friends & even had romantic interests based on music taste. A common experience for those of us who got into punk, I expect. As I got older, I came to see there were plenty of assholes with gold taste and good people with bad taste. I still made some friends over music, but I stopped taking a difference in taste personally.

I’ve hardly ever had a romantic relationship with anyone who shared my taste. And the closest I’ve had was terrible. Half of my friends like absolute terrible music and consider me a weird contrarian.eumaas wrote: ↑28 Apr 2018, 10:59amThat’s an extreme outlier. And as has been said, it’s the ideology that leads someone to nazi punk, not the music. I can’t think of a single nazi punk band that doesn’t have a corresponding sounding band with better politics.
