Legend in the drumming world.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

He was an absolute legend. One of my favorite Hal Blaine performances is his playing on "The Boxer" by Simon & Garfunkel. Blaine and producer Roy Halee found a spot in the studio - I think it was out near the elevators - where the sound was thunderous. The snare shot after "Lie, lie, lie" is incredible. It sounds like a canon.

Yeah, Hal Blaine is all over SO many classic records, with very little credit if at all.
And I can also recommend a CD of his called 'Buh-Doom!' - a spoken word album of him telling jokes. Yes, really.

BTW, if y'alls haven't seen the documentary The Wrecking Crew, it's well worth the time.

I was just coming here to say this. The stuff with Carole Kaye is particularly great for me.

I've also got an audiobook of the same name (I assume the two are connected) but it's never risen high enough in the queue to listen to it.

There's a story about a security man coming around the corner just as Blaine hit his snare - and getting the scare of his life!
