The John Lurie Thread

Post by eumaas »

It's terrible and tragic that he's stricken with that awful neurological condition.

Here's an interview from 2006. Check out the photos too.

Just wanted to mention that I've been listening to Lounge Lizards on an almost nightly basis for the last couple weeks. That's a fucking awesome record to spin late at night.

Also his performance in Down by Law would suggest he might have been a better actor than musician, allowed sufficient time to branch out.

I agree with the first point but I (angrily!) reject the second. How much Lounge Lizards material have you actually listened to?

S/T and Live in Tokyo.

I mean, it's not a slight on his music career, I just think that Down by Law performance is a total tour-de-force. It's kind of an asinine statement to begin with though since musical talent and acting talent are usually judged by completely separate criteria (except for, you know, the Tom Waitses out there who are perpetuating characters in their music).

Lurie's an amateur but charismatic actor, a better filmmaker, and a phenomenal composer. His compositions blend minimalism and jazz in a way that hadn't been done before--additive processes plus Zornian blocks with an impressive use of improvisers. John Lurie is one of the best composers to come out of the late 70s early 80s downtown cauldron. He's no Zorn, but he's very inventive and has both an immediately recognizable compositional voice and performing style on his sax. Also, the Lounge Lizards served as an immense talent pool of and "finishing school" for improvisers--LL alumni have gone on to do great things.

I don't know shit about jazz so I wasn't qualified to judge anything but basic sound. And what I heard was, "Huh, chilled out John Zorn with a seedy aesthetic. Awesome."
