Well I'm a Springsteen fan but I'm not a zealot. That's a lot of people to tar with the same brush.
Do you really think my statement should be read that way? That anyone who likes Springsteen is automatically a zealot? Hoy is the biggest Brooose fan on the board and he has a good sense of humour about the guy's weaknesses, so of course I can see variety. It should have been obvious that I was referring to the superfan, especially of the rock critic variety, that treats him as the last, best hope for all that is good.

I didn't see you mention "superfan" anywhere before this post only "Springsteen fans". That would apply to anybody who is over zealous of any band. I'm saying that it isn't the case of there being one type of Springsteen fan. I suppose when it comes to The Clash I'm an absolute crazy fucker as I spend hours upon hours listening to live shows and reworking them. Some people just like what they like is all. I don't like the term "superfan" very much you may very well be a superfan of Wire but you are different to the next guy who likes them.
You also attacked his music for being over emotional and sluggish although this was Heston's opinion of "Born to Run" you stated it applied to all his music which is somewhat harsh. Not everyone believes Bruce is the second coming or even the third. Rock 'n' Roll saved Bruce not the other way 'round.

I want to say there was a correlation between the time the Springsteen started receiving large scale broad acceptance and when Bryan Adams started getting big(in the US). And i can see marketing types wanting to frame things that way.
The subtext of the two for marketing was that after all that faggy black disco shit, goddammit, this was real white male rock—guys who change their own oil, drink beer, wear Levis, and fuck girls.
This is one of the many reasons why the gay as anything Frankie Goes to Hollywood cover of Born to Run is so good.
Even now, would Bruce's audience accept him covering something like Jet Boy Jet Girl or Glad to be Gay?
Right. Same reason why Scissor Sisters' version of Comfortably Numb is so great.
