Why don't you like sitars?
Not a sound I especially like—it grates on me—but the larger point is that George's sitar songs are pretty weak as songs. For Beatles songs with a sitar, only "Norwegian Wood" works.
What about Tomorrow Never Knows?
Is there a sitar in there? Okay, that one definitely works, too.
*whew*
As I said above, TNK is my favourite Beatles song and there's no longer any doubt about it. It's great on its own, but it also works so perfectly as a dividing point between Beatles' eras but also the moment when youth culture in the 60s started to splinter. It was an invitation and a challenge to their fans—you ready to go to strange new places? (McKinney's book deals with this well.)

That's what I played for my class after they admitted that none of them had ever heard TMK. Mad Men used it so damned perfectly to illustrate that "The 60s" had really begun. Don turning it off halfway thru nailed it on the head.

I loved how earlier in the episode he stopped somebody by saying "I KNOW what the Beatles sound like."

Exactly. It's set up so well. Not only do the Beatles confound what a Beatles record sounds like, the confidence of knowing what the world around them means is about to go out the window. When the series began, what grabbed me was that the audience knows that everything they think they know is going to get challenged over the course of the decade, and that symbolizes where it kicks into high gear. Not for nothing that Don's life gets thrown into a blender for the rest of the way.

I'm very interested in both of your reasoning. I love that stuff too, but it's rare-ish to hear this opinion.

They prefer the Beatles to be a Carl Perkins cover band.

I think I read somewhere that Perkins was the artist the Beatles performed the most covers by, but I might be imagining that.

Actually... this sounds like the trolley I should be riding.

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead

I'm sure it's true. They did two of his songs on Beatles For Sale alone.
