I listened to that new Gang of Four ep so you don't have to. And I can confirm that you don't want to. Holy crap, it is really bad. Tuneless, meandering garbage.

Hello,

I just listened to the tracks on Google play - that was enough. I must agree with your review - it sounds like someone gave the house band at a Holiday Inn a Mac and a couple of industrial albums.

I'm kinda wistful for the Gang of Four who gave us Hard and Mall. :meh:

I just listened to Entertainment and Solid Gold yesterday and it’s heartbreaking to think what they became.

Gun to your head, which is better, Entertainment or Solid Gold? For the longest time I would have said Entertainment, but now I think I prefer the sparer follow-up.

I think it’s still Entertainment, but it’s neck and neck.

I was discussing this elsewhere, but Return the Gift - especially with the remix disc - is my go-to Go4.

That’s better than it ever needed to be and a really good selection of songs.

I’ve never heard the remix disc.

The Go Home remix of "To Hell With Poverty" is my favourite version of the song. But, yeah, weird as it seems, if you can only have one Go4 album, Return the Gift is certainly defensible.

I think they are. It's not just the effects, but the sweet vocals vocals over the mega distortion that's the template. And I think we're all familiar with bands that were influential off one album!

Maybe. Or that JMC is in the tree but not in that inner circle root system you place them.

Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, 'Message From Beat Street: The Best of Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel & the Furious Five' (1994).
I mostly just listen to "The Message", "New York New York" and "White Lines", but their 12" mixes make for an absolutely perfect mini-album. And the Wimbish/LeBlanc/McDonald Sugarhill Records house band reinforces why, aside from the Roots, so much hip hop has been so musically sterile for so long.
