Great minds think alike. I'm also listening to this today!
I remember Ratty observing of PSB that they've steadily evolved to stay current in dance pop yet they've never stopped sounding like themselves. There's a consistency without every sounding old.
That's a great way to put it.

I've long found Neil Tennant a rather notable singer, conveying a certain detachment and passivity. It has a real postmodern weariness to it, tho slightly knowingly bemused. Like it's purposefully de-passioned.
That's a long winded way of saying he sounds bored. His vocals always sound really suited to the track. I agree the PSBs have made some excellent music.
 Yes, bored, but there's something purposeful to it all and different than, say, Leonard Cohen sounding bored.

Hello,

If I'm being truthful, he sounds bored. If I'm being kind, he sounds aloof.

I'd say detached; aloof is more snobbish, which I don't hear.

I've always thought his vocal was bored and nonchalant.

Well they probably have a couple of other fans. But yeah "Doctor Medulla PSB super fanboy" does sound about right.

That's what's so amazing about my super duper perceptivity—I'm not even a fan!

Pet Shop Boys, Smash. What a terrible cover for such a fantastic compilation of singles. An under-the-radar great band.
I really like their first album but I haven't been grabbed by anything I've heard after that. I'll check out this comp.

I'm familiar with the singles all the way to the end of disc 2. Disc 3 is terra incognita for me.

Anyone remember Tour of Duty? That was must-see TV for me in the late 80s.

Yeah definitely remember that. Not exactly Oliver Stone-standard Vietnam grit but watchable entertainment all the same. That sergeant guy who ended up the hero every episode and kept coming back for more even after his tours were over. He just couldn't get enough of the 'Nam!

Just got turned onto these guys, Iron Drugs with a new album from a couple weeks ago. Absolutely fucking slaps, highly recommended for revbob and others who like their punk rock tough and lo-fi:
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead
