One of my all time favourites, love The Clash version but the original can't be topped.
Reminds me of sound systems on very hot summer evenings in North Kensington especially around carnival time.

Love both The Clash version and Junior Murvin's version equally. Although Lee Scratch Perry and Junior Murvin thought The Clash had ruined the song. Crazy to think they covered such a contemporary song at the time.

Also love this track from the same album.

Yeah. When I learned how new it was at the time, I was pretty shocked.

I really should like this album more as it checks so many of my boxes. But it always sounds meandering, like elaborate demos of dicking around. Anyway, I'll listen to Soul Mining after this.

edit: And now onto Infected, my favourite The The album and one of my perfect 80s records.

Such a fabulous album. Songs about Lou Reed/Robert Mugabe/Evel Knievel/Hedy Lammar/Sgt. Bilko/Mussolini. And a second disc called "Restorations" of ten Stranglers tunes. Great stuff.

I gave that a listen a few days back. About 4 decent songs the rest sound like unfinished ideas with too much repetition lyrically.

Listening to this hard hitting R&B / Garage Rock classic from '79. The Clash obviously loved these guys as they used this albums opening cover version of The Standells "Dirty Water" when they played Boston in '79. I love The Standells original but this version might just top it.

The Police - Message in a Box: The Complete Recordings (1993)

Image

Been quite a while since I've listened to these guys. I've softened considerably to the back half of The Police's career, but those first two records and early-era tracks are just so flippin' good. "Nothing Achieving" is as good a punk song as anyone has ever recorded, imho. The personalities in the band almost ruin it all, but the music is too good to ignore. Gotta not put this stuff back on the shelf for song this time.

Yes I bought the first album after hearing them initially on John Peel. I bought my sister Regatta de Blanc (on 2 10” vinyl) which I since acquired. I like some of the early stuff.

Not quite complete but a great box set. The early new wave / white reggae tracks are superb and I like all the latter pop stuff. They were a brilliant band and amazing musicians. Maybe a little too technical to be punk but all the best bands from that era left the punk sound behind fairly quickly and just kept the all important attitude. The Police get shit but that's based mostly on Stings follow up career and is really unfair.
