Neil Young - Decade (1976)
Heard the RSD 2017 repress of this sounded great so picked it up, and boy does it. Say what you want about Neil, but he knows how to get a record pressed. This easily supplants the, I think, three shitty old copies of this collection that I have. And boy, what a collection of songs. For anyone who doesn't get why NY is regarded so highly, this album makes the best case possible. He's sort of become a sleeper fave artist over the years.

Tom Robinson, 'North By Northwest, 1982.
Hadn't listened to this in years, and the vibe all comes flooding back. Sort of his version of Bowie's "Heroes", but double the paranoia and sadness, and also recorded in Germany for that delightfully chilly feel we all know and love.

My older bro Sean's vinyl of this got me into Young Neil, with just one song (took me another, ahem, decade to really get into him). "Like A Hurricane".Marky Dread wrote: ↑28 Apr 2017, 11:36pmHave the two disc CD from way back. I like it.Flex wrote: ↑28 Apr 2017, 12:41pmNeil Young - Decade (1976)

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that original studio take (subsequent live versions are almost too much to take) is maybe the most emotionally visceral guitar playing by anyone I can think of. Big statement, I know, but listen what's happening there...feels like his life is at stake.

Hello,
Scary Monsters - David Bowie. Bowie's. Best. Album. Admittedly, my opinion, but this is Bowie's best and most consistent work. From the moment you drop the needle to the end, it's all good to great. Some may complain about the accessibility but that's not a fault. Great music, great lyrics, great mood.

My favourite track from the album, "Merrily Up On High" (co-written with Peter Gabriel). The jolliest, and most human, look at nuclear war. Great sing along!Marky Dread wrote: ↑29 Apr 2017, 1:05amHaven't heard this in an age. Definitely underrated.muppet hi fi wrote: ↑28 Apr 2017, 10:47pmTom Robinson, 'North By Northwest, 1982.

Re: What Are you Listening to Right Now?
Glad to see this record mentioned, too, as a TRB fan from way back: my faves are Atmospherics, Can't Keep Away, Looking For A Bonfire, and Merrily Up On High -- though I have to say, my pick track is Love Comes, just because it's so unlike anything else, sound-wise, on the album. Which makes it the perfect ending.Tom Robinson, 'North By Northwest, 1982.

Re: What Are you Listening to Right Now?
Jarboe re-records a bunch of old Swans/Skin songs. I've never been that gung-ho about her work in Swans—her voice is an acquired taste, and it never seemed to fit well in Swans, imo—but I like her solo stuff a lot more. This is predictably dark and haunting, but not the overpowering assault of Swans. More unsettlingly gothic (not goth, tho).

Re: What Are you Listening to Right Now?
Hey, why not another Jarboe album? This came out after Swans' The Great Annihilator, I think, and ends up being a bit of a preview for the postrock opus Soundtracks for the Blind. In its own way, this is an essential piece of the Swans canon.
