The Skids, 'The Virgin Years' 6-disc box set. After Stuart Adamson died, Mick Jones said they were the only band ever that the Clash were scared to follow onstage. Indeed Stuart was one of the most inventive, unique, disciplined and exciting guitarists ever. Not too shabby in the songwriting department either (as evidenced by Big Country's first four albums).

btw - our own Mr. John Heston's guitar playing - whether intentionally or not - sounds a lot like Stuart Adamson (albeit in a different musical context).

Well cheers mate, I'll take that. I think I've mentioned before I learned how to play guitar along to the first Big Country album (amongst a few others) and that must have rubbed off a bit. Great musician was Stuart.

Just reading about these fellows. They sure seem to get a lot of flak for being pretentious, but there's other groups out there with pretty arcane lyrics who don't get that kind of critique. Industry bias?

New OMD. They still sound like themselves. Despite using all the fancy technologies and such, you can still hear that band that made weird electro pop with tape loops and basic synths.

They were so good early on.

I'm also a sucker for their slick mid-80s commercial stuff. The faux strings on "If You Leave" get me every time.

I hate that movie more than is worthwhile. Every male character is supremely punchable (yeah, you too, Ducky). Molly and Annie Potts and the soundtrack are the only redeeming things about it.

Ducky was the worst of them all! And I did have a soft spot for pathetic dad, played by Kaleb approved HDS. And yes, he was a dick, but Spader was at his peak then.

Perhaps Murphy can't reach previous levels, perhaps he took too much time off. At times it sounds like U2, at times like Talking Heads Remain in Light but a bit blander - yet it doesn't sound as original as previous LCD stuff. Losing my edge?

Maybe I'm holding them to too high a standard. I really like The London Session and Daft Punk is Playing at my House is outstanding. They showed up and had a different sound. Their film, Shut Up and Play the Hits, is pretty good. I'll continue and and hope it'll grow on me.
