Heston and Marky's Friday Top 5
Re: Heston and Marky's Friday Top 5
Every time I venture back into this thread thinking I can contribute got me
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Somebody was trying to tell me that CDs are better than vinyl because they don't have any surface noise. I said, "Listen, mate, "life" has surface noise."

I'm thinking I should have moved "Hang On" much higher. Such a damned good band.
Anyway, listening on my way to school I was again struck by how weirdly slow and restrained "Everything Flows" is:
To the musicians here, am I just an untalented goof in thinking this? It just feels like it should be played faster—Idlewild's cover is the "proper speed" to my ears—and that the band must be fighting the urge to speed up when they play it. People with ability, your opinions, please.

Not really a musician but it's perfect. The pace is it's charm.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑20 Oct 2017, 6:32pmI'm thinking I should have moved "Hang On" much higher. Such a damned good band.

But what I mean is whether it'd be a bastard to play because you'd want to go faster, that the pace goes against expectations or whatever.Marky Dread wrote: ↑20 Oct 2017, 6:42pmNot really a musician but it's perfect. The pace is it's charm.

The band I was in a 100 years ago used to cover it in rehearsals and it's easy to play slow or fast. The chords are fairly basic.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑20 Oct 2017, 6:54pmBut what I mean is whether it'd be a bastard to play because you'd want to go faster, that the pace goes against expectations or whatever.Marky Dread wrote: ↑20 Oct 2017, 6:42pmNot really a musician but it's perfect. Okay. I just hear and think, man, it should go faster. How are they able to restrain themselves?Marky Dread wrote: ↑20 Oct 2017, 7:05pmThe band I was in a 100 years ago used to cover it in rehearsals and it's easy to play slow or fast. Umm well they wrote it and strummed it at the correct pace. Unlike most of the cover versions.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑20 Oct 2017, 7:24pmOkay. I just hear and think, man, it should go faster. Because I've been chugging a lot of thru TFC the last couple days, here's my goofy description: If the Beatles came out of the Get Back sessions rejuvenated and happy to play straight-on rock n roll together again for the next twenty or thirty years, that's what TFC sounds like.

I mean, you basically just described "power-pop," but you're not wrong.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑21 Oct 2017, 7:26pmBecause I've been chugging a lot of thru TFC the last couple days, here's my goofy description: If the Beatles came out of the Get Back sessions rejuvenated and happy to play straight-on rock n roll together again for the next twenty or thirty years, that's what TFC sounds like.

Yeah, but there's a bit more sweetness and harmony in TFC than I associate with power pop (sometimes, but not always). Maybe I'm seeing more of a distinction there than is deserved.Wolter wrote: ↑21 Oct 2017, 11:08pmI mean, you basically just described "power-pop," but you're not wrong.Dr.

Re: Heston and Marky's Friday Top 5
You need to acknowledge the likes of "Bad Finger" and "The Raspberries" to get closer. The Beatles "Get Back" sessions you mentioned are a good staring point. With Power Pop it's a mix of before and after punk. There are those bands like the two I've just mentioned as examples then there is the New Wave Power Poppers like Katrina and the Waves etc. Teenage Fanclub are much closer to the pre punk bands in sound. But there are a lot of influences you get some Beach Boys harmonies then mix that up with the indie sound of The Vaselines/BMX Bandits/Captain America/Eugenius. Eugene Kelly of Vas/Cap Am/Eug was a close friend of the band playing on each others records.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑22 Oct 2017, 6:22amYeah, but there's a bit more sweetness and harmony in TFC than I associate with power pop (sometimes, but not always).
