1. New Years Eve - Tom Waits
2. No Guilt - The Waitresses
3. Spectacular Views - Rilo Kiley
4. In a Big Country - Big Country
5. We Sing Hallelujah - Richard & Linda Thompson (actually a great anti- new years/renewal anthem, but the music and instrumentation are so bloody cheery, as is the "exaltation of despair").

And here's my no. 1 pick. Such an honest, funny, sad and sweet song. "...Calvin's right - I should go back to driving truck."

I'm blanking on this one—as I tend to do when the category is thematic rather than one artist—but I will offer up Talk Talk's "New Grass," which captures the sound of hope and rebirth.

I think I was arranged to go through the end of the year. New year, I think I'm out.

Damaged Goods
Not Great Men
To Hell With Poverty
I Love a Man In Uniform
Anthrax

I realized how tough this would be and decided to go with my gut and take the first five that got stuck in my head.

Literally just yesterday I said to myself, “I need to listen to more Gang Of Four.

EDIT: THEN I BROKE MY OWN RULE AND SWAPPED ONE OUT.

That's easy: Side 1 of Hard. Done.

Alternate picks:
To Hell With Poverty
I Found That Essence Rare (Peel Sessions version)
What We All Want
At Home He's a Tourist
and for an odd final pick, Life! It's a Shame
