The Ritz, June '86. Bob's second-to-last show. Unusual setlist...very little pre-Tim stuff, some early PTMM previews, and covers-heavy (but similarly together-sounding unlike the usual drunk-show faire). And unusual juxtaposition of drink with Paul mildly sauced, slurring a litte, and ad-libbing half the vocals...and Bob sober and in total command of the show. One of his greatest guitar performances ever...emptying his whole arsenal of tricks with extended solos and different takes on the arrangements. Recommend d/l'ing off Mats Archive. Best version of "I.O.U." I've ever heard, and they eschew the usual slow buildup on "Answering Machine" in favor of a start-to-finish full-band scorcher.muppet hi fi wrote:Wow, that is really together. Where and when's that from?Rat Patrol wrote:And sometimes...the liquor bubbles in their brains compel them to reach further and further to the end of the branch without thinking...and instead of it breaking and them collapsing in a heap. . .
. . .the results are pretty damn good. Put it this way: the original artists sure weren't clean-of-vice enough that year to do it this coherently if they were headlining across the street.

Re: THE REPLACEMENTS Song of the Day
Speaking of Tommy and Rod Stewart, when Tommy's hair was at it's Rod Stewart-y-est, in '83-'84, he used to come over to my place to hang out with my roommate Katie O. He'd invariably drink all Katie's beer, then drink all mine. So one day I confronted him
"Tommy, you owe me about three cases of beer".
He started lipping off and cracking wise and punched me in the shoulder.
I said "Tommy don't do that again I'll forcibly cut your stupid hair".
He thought that was hilarious and was laughing his really obnoxious laugh (you can hear it on certain 'Mats boots) and punched my shoulder again.
"Tom - if you do that one more time I'm going to throw you out the fucking window".
Whack.
I just walked away. He was 16 I was 19, whaddya gonna do?

Yeah I always wonder why bands allow their stuff to be released with various CD markers totally in the wrong place it does nothing to listening experience when you've already heard the original.Rat Patrol wrote:It's the segue into the next track, "Rattlesnake".Marky Dread wrote:Great fun track not sure about the crowd cheer at the end.Rat Patrol wrote:[v][/v]

From their very first studio demo. . .

Very 60's garage-band sounding. Different feel from the album version.

By popular demand, that 'loud' version of Answering Machine from the Ritz '86 show:Rat Patrol wrote:The Ritz, June '86. Bob's second-to-last show. Re: THE REPLACEMENTS Song of the Day
This was 'the' live cover staple they hung onto from Day 1 in 1980 all the way to the very last show in '91...and which they must've revisited in about 50 different tempos and arrangements over the years. Usually reserved for 'sober' shows, so they seemed to put Hank on a higher pedestal than others. . .

This was the only time they ever cut it in the studio.
