Can any computer boffins help me?

Post by Heston »

I'm on Windows Vista, my computers only a couple of months old, yet I'm getting issues with pages taking ages to load and Youtube videos stopping and starting.
I have all the usual firewalls, anti-virus stuff etc. I've even ran Superantispyware and CCleaner, two of the most recommended programs and they say there's nothing wrong. Anyone help?

Have you created a lot of files and deleted them anytime recently? Try defregmenting the drive.

You're running Vista, eh? I'd recommend handing your computer over to Robosaurus and calling it a day. [/nerd snort]

Broadband router? I'm a technophobe, but I think that's it, definitely broadband.

I haven't done a defrag for a while, I'll try that. Thanks folks.

How long have you had this problem? It is intermittent or do you always have it for every site?
Which browser/version do you use: IE (6 or 7) or Firefox (2 or 3)?

All video sites youtube etc. keep buffering even for short clips, and most sites take a few seconds to load, whereas it used to be instant. It's been happening for a couple of weeks. I'm on AOL version 9.0.
I don't know if it's related, but lately I have to keep re-admitting password info on sites like this, whereas I used to be automatically logged in. And yes, I ticked the 'remember me' box! ;)

This may sound silly, but also try unplugging your modem + router and then plugging them back in again.

Also, are you using Firefox?

The re-admitting password thing is most likely caused from running those anti-spyware utilities with the clean-up setting on high (thereby deleting your cookies which stored your settings/passwords).
As for your original problem I suggest something like this: http://journals.aol.com/communityeditor ... ssues/2520
In the end it may be no better than the spyware cleanups you did but this way you are telling the browser to reset its cache itself which is better.

Hope this helps

I'll try that Inder, I'm defragging at the moment.
I have Firefox installed, but use the AOL browser (I don't know if it's powered by Firefox).

Sounds more like a CPU / memory issue to me. Are you running other apps at the same time as your browser?
