Not really into Dan Brown. I like his antecedents (Foucault's Pendulum, the Eight) better.

They worship the Peacock Angel, who Christians and Muslims claim is the Devil.

Blueberries and salad is off the menu. They are repulsed by the colour blue, being a Man Utd fan I can sympathize. But hey doesn't the Peacock contain blue in it's feather colours?

Imagine hating seeing the sky or the ocean. Malak Taus is one scary bird.

I am really enjoying these observations eumaas keep them coming.

Finished listening to Hitchens' memoir today and started Bret Easton Ellis' new novel. I guardedly recommend Hitchens, as long as you know what you're getting into. He's equal parts irritating, fascinating, and entertaining. It's also a true memoir as opposed to autobiography, less concerned with doing a blow-by-blow of his life than interrogating those issues that he regards as so important to making him the drunk grouch that he is. Not as self-critical as it could be, but neither is it a settling of scores and rationalization of past actions.

Also about halfway thru Tom Perrotta's Joe College, a light comic novel about Yale in the early 80s.

I'm alternating between the Nag Hammadi scriptures at night and The Omnivore's Dilemma during the day.

The former, is of course, up there with the Dead Sea Scrolls in terms of major scriptural discoveries of the 20th century. The latter (a suggestion of Ali's foodie cousin) is a rather depressing, but interesting, layman's introduction to the nature of food distribution in (primarily) North America, paying attention to the tortuous path food takes to get to your plate.

If you enjoy that, you might want to follow it up with an item from my list on Valentinianism that I wrote when I was 14.

I disagree on Ashbery though I agree that he's a poor model for other poets (and I like the shout out to Berryman). I agree 100% on Billy Collins, a man whose work I fucking loathe, and I haven't read any of the others.

Shakespeare's sonnets and poems and The Best of Sherlock Holmes.

Conan Doyle's stuff is unexpectedly trashy and fun.

Totally.

I like how much of a cold, aloof, arrogant fuck Holmes is.
