I don't know anyone that didn't like him. I'm curious as to the full story on this one.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I liked the guy immediately from the very first Parts Unknown I ever saw. One of the few non-musical celebrities I have any interest in. The episode about Staten Island, where he hangs out with David Johansen, was a hoot. RIP.

Apart from family/friends this is one of the worst. A tough one to accept. Id always hoped Id have the good fortune to run into him at an airport bar or something during my own travels.

Yeah, I'm surprised at how much this is impacting me. Not someone I really closely followed, but he was definitely someone I respected who seemed to really have the right view of his place in the world and how to engage with it. Shows how deep the frissons of our external and internal selves can run, which may be part of why it's so unsettling.

Good post, man. But the bolded part struck me especially: that seems a fine synopsis for how all humans might live their lives, in the best - and maybe most minimal - sense.

That's her dad. I thought that TV food guy was her husband, it was her boyfriend.

At least there's some good news today.

Learned today that one of my friends (who owned the bar/restaurant I used to work at) was actually friends with Bourdain.
