What Have You Since IMCT

Post by 101Walterton »

Following on from Inder’s post in the 400 Posts thread there have been many significant events and milestones in the lives of IMCTers from engagements, marriages, births, divorces, graduations, degrees, album releases, books, careers, retirements and sadly deaths.
What milestones have occurred and how has your life changed?

What have you since IMCT?

Fifteen years ago this September, the Boss and I formally got married after ten years together (ye gods, we've been together more than half our lives!). We moved to Ottawa at the end of 2009 and, knowing that I was going to be canned in a downsizing, I went back to school and completed a doctorate in US history. During the IMCT years, we said goodbye to two cats, Dickens and Pagan, and a dog, Ella, and welcomed two cats, Charlotte and Zoë, to the family. After renting for about five years, we sold our house in Saskatoon and bought one here. And I lost some hair and some weight, but gained some epilepsy. Yet I am, bizarrely, in the best shape of my life.

In 2003, I was recently engaged to my girlfriend, living in Charleston, SC, working in clinical data management, and finishing up the elusive last credits on my college degree, after years of dicking around.

Since then I’ve moved to Chicago, broken up with that girlfriend, worked years in a completely different industry, met and married a completely different woman, had a kid, lost my job, became a stay-at-home dad, accidentally made Holiday Road the unofficial theme song of the 2013 Blackhawks, watched a picture I drew in 2011 go insanely viral without attribution in 2017, and am about to become a dad again.

Oh, and I quit smoking somewhere in there.

Back in Dec 2003 I was still with the ex wife, childless, without a car, in a dead-end minimum wage job, and still trying to work out how to use a computer. I was attracted to Satch's (as it was then) because of all those bootlegs I could see, the idea of a forum was strange to me, but after lurking for a while I decided to jump in. Fast forward 15 years and I have a better paid job, new girlfriend, my own place, an (untidy) car, and a beautiful, switched on and sensible 11 year old daughter. The band I'm playing with is doing pretty ok for a bunch of old gits and our diary is full, so I suppose i'm reasonably happy with how the last 15 years have gone. My only regret is probably my marriage failing but shit happens sometimes, and you just have to move on.

I joined in 2004, the year VH and I got married. Since then - VH getting diagnosed with and surviving colon colon cancer, the birth of VH, Jr., two job changes, losing on Jeopardy!, my dad and both grandmothers dying, the guy to the left dying, my best childhood friend dying, a frivolous lawsuit brought on by our crazy next door neighbor, moving to our new house (which I love), adopting a new dog and taking my kid to see Blondie, Violent Femmes and Pixies so he doesn't inherit my husband's awful music taste!

2011 - Got drunk at the Burgundy Room with Tep and Kaleb
2016 - Had dinner in Seattle with Kory

I was dating Marlene #1 when I joined.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Stuff I have chronicled here over the last 11 1/2 years:

Summer 2006 - Living in my college town with my college friends, working my first aimless job in Sacramento. At the end of the summer, I moved to San Diego with the hope that I would be able reform the band I loved the most. That failed miserably, so in 2007, I moved to San Francisco with the company I had been working for in San Diego. In 2008, the job went to shit and I got essentially fired. Decided to move into the construction industry at the worst possible time. Got laid off and then spent the first half of 2009 looking for work and eventually found the company I worked for the next seven years our of sheer luck. My 23 year old cousin died of cancer in the fall of 2009. 2010, finally got over Marlene #1 and before I got to enjoy single life too much, ended up with a really abusive girlfriend I would date for the next year and a half or so (didn't chronicle that one too openly). 2013 met my now wife on OKCupid, moved to Oakland in 2014, got married in 2015, had a kid in 2016.

2008 - Got wasted with Wolter and Flex
2009 - Met Kaleb for a split second to give him a Pixies t-shirt
2011 - Hucked pow with Flex
2013 - Raged with Inder and Maj

Saw tep a few times in there too, Briggy like a thousand times. Spiff in like 2008 and 2014.

Joined up when I was 15, but turned 16 soon after. Now I'm about to be 31.

I can't remember what year I joined, but I'm pretty sure it was before 2006 aka the year I lost my dog of 16 years. I moved to upstate NY, gained three cats in 2008, suffered from anxiety and depression for the next eight years, gained almost 40 pounds, moved again, lost a cat, lost the weight, had health issues, finally getting my life back on track even starting a new job tomorrow.

I don't remember exactly when I joined IMCT but it was at least 15 yrs ago. Pretty sure I was looking for Clash bootlegs & stumbled upon this place. I probably lurked for a year or so before getting up the nerve to post something, to a thread discussion about whistling in songs. Since then I've managed to stay happily married & gainfully employed at the same college, said goodbye to my mother, three cats & a dog (Moxie, Goo, Bean, and Topper), and said hello to two cats (Katerina & Pie). Latest change (last year) has been moving from suburbia to an older/larger house in a small town that we love. I still hate the Clash.
