New York Calling

Post by 101Walterton »

Actually I need help from New Yorkers.
Need to book somewhere to have Christmas Dinner / lunch which seems to be a lot harder than I thought it would be.
I am staying in Time Square but hotel does not do Xmas dinner can anyone recommend a restaurant or hotel that does?

Have you tried a place called Pearl Oyster Bar? A friend of a friend is the owner. They may be open. Or, you might have to just roll with it and eat Chinese with all of the Jews.

ETA: I talked to my friend and they are closed. But you should try it when it's open!

You should try PJ Clarke's on Third Ave. I just checked and they are accepting Christmas Day reservations on their site. I would call to double check. It's a fantastic old place. Buddy Holly proposed to Maria Elena there, Dick Clarke always had a booth ready for him for after the broadcast in New Year's Eve, and Nat King Cole claimed they made the Cadillac of hamburgers. Make sure you go to the Third Ave one which is the original.

I get excited about giving NYC advice. For Christmas you should also check out some of the great Chinese joints which are going to be open. There is a tradition which I have taken part in among the Jewish people of New York, Chinese dinner and a movie.

Chinese Tuxedo in Chinatown
Nom Wah Tea Parlor in Chinatown
Joe's Shanghai in Chinatown
(expect festive lines)

Thanks BB I know of the America / Jewish tradition of eating Chinese but we are hoping to find something more traditional? Like the Home Coming feasts you see on TV or in films.

Take a look at PJ Clarke's as mentioned above. I will ask my wife tonight if she has any other ideas for you.

Keens Steakhouse does a Christmas Eve dinner which might be pretty special.

To go to places like Keens do you have to be over 20 to get in or are the licenses for restaurants / bars different?

Keens is a restaurant with a bar. Generally if you can sit at a table and food is served you're fine. Drinking age is 21, dont know how strict nyc is these days

What Bob said. You can sit at a table and dine but you can’t sit at the bar.
