Ha! No, they're decent enough people. Very quiet. They don't initiate a hello to anyone, but I have had a few conversations with the husband (a Limey, no less).
I assume most of those conversations revolve around condom pastrami.

An update (for those requiring closure): A big ol' home heating truck is parked out front with its rear door open, so, yup, a new furnace is being installed. Curious that it would take this long, even with the odd operating hours between Christmas and New Year's.

What's a heating truck?
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

What's a heating truck?
I guess that would be the delivery vehicle which is delivering the Medulla's new furnace.

Right, except it's our neighbours' new furnace, not ours.

I had to call several heatring contractors today. The only confirmed date I could get was Friday at noon.

How big a city do you live in? In a city the size of Ottawa, I wouldn't think it that impossible to get a furnace guy. I mean, it's the explanation that makes the most sense, but it nevertheless surprises me. When we bought ours, it came with a 24-hour emergency service guarantee as long as we book them to do yearly cleanings.

I was always told growing up that the people of Vermont dry and burn their own excrement for heating.

It might be to keep the hippies from smoking it.

The Burlington metro area population is around 100k. I know from driving around that a lot of these places are flat out dealing mostly with frozen pipes more than likely. That takes a lot more work/time than a faulty relay or bad igniter. I did manage to get it going but will get a pro to give it a once over because the thought of facing several days of no heat is not something I am ready to embrace just yet.

As for the poop part Im still a NYer at heart.

I guess, but in terms of prioritizing importance, I'd say a dead furnace is higher than frozen pipes. Anyway, the neighbour's furnace exhaust is now spewing natural gas vapour, tho I would guess it'll be a couple days for the inside of their house to properly warm.

Yeah I dont know how they triage these things. Some places didnt answer, some blew me off because I wasnt a customer, only one could give me an actual date/time and that was for Friday

In other weather-related homeowner news, when we had our roof resurfaced this summer, the slope was altered (it's a French-Canadian flat-style roof), which changed part of where water drains. We don't have much insulation in our attic, which I'm fine with because it melts the snow up there, keeping it from building up. But now, in the new drainage pattern, part of it is going to an area without an eavestrough and landing on a lower roof and freezing (as well as creating an ice giant up the side). So I went out and bought a deicing cable. I know it's not meant for flat roofs, but there is enough of a pitch that the water will definitely drain rather than pool. Tomorrow I'll be hooking it up to melt the ice and bring peace to the troubled land once more.

Moral of the story: There are times I wish I had a landlord to take care of this crap.
