I'm so happy Green Book won best picture...

Seriously, what a garbage choice. The story is a tired trope that might just seem clumsy in some years, but in 2019 seems outright tone deaf. In an age where racism is still very much alive and well - we don't need another "let's all just get along" feel good take on race. I mean, it's a nice sentiment, but it also seems like a cop out. The topic of race in the United States needs hard reflection, hard questions, and hard answers. It doesn't need to be glossed over. The win is especially galling because there actually was a film in BlacKkKlansman that took a real look at racism in the country and that did ask hard questions of the viewer. A definite swing and miss...

Because stars need to keep being born. Otherwise there'll be no stars. They'll be extinct. Is that what you want? The extinction of stars!?
Define stars?
The people who twinkle and glow and who will surely ascend to heaven to sit with Jesus in judgement of all humanity for all time. Like Rob schneider and Tim Allen.
In that case extinction could be the answer.

I dont generally watch awards shows and this was no different.

A Driving Miss Daisy for the new age. I must say I haven't seen it but that's kind of the impression I get and yeah there seems to be a bias against Spike Lee. And holy shit I'm just realizing Driving Miss Daisy also beat Do the Right Thing.

SL made a comment that whenever there's a movie about black people driving white people, he's screwed.

I think Spike had a reason to be upset - and I don't think it was because his film lost - I think it was because his film lost to a film that is so tone deaf when it comes to race. People don't like having to confront ugly issues like racism - they prefer tough subject like that sugarcoated and made to feel good so there's no guilt - hey, everything is cool, but isn't it just so sad how poorly black people used to be treated?

Ultimately, tho, who cares? The Oscars are as indicative of movie quality as the Grammys are to music. It's taking the temperature of entertainment biz insiders, which is only accurate with a rectal thermometer.

I finally watched Blackkklansman yesterday and it was fantastic. It really did deserve to win - I haven't seen Green Book, but I have an irrational hatred for Viggo Mortensen (you just know he treated Exene like shit), so I won't see it. The only thing I found distracting was that it supposedly took place in Colorado Springs, but it was so obviously filmed elsewhere (upstate NY? Canada?). A stupid thing to be distracted by, but I was distracted nonetheless.

I haven't seen any of those movies, but I will say I took some pleasure in Spike Lee not winning because, despite his skills as a filmmaker and commentator on race in America, I find him an insufferable egomaniac, even by Hollywood's standards. I recall when TNN changed its name to Spike TV, SL threatened to sue, claiming they were leaching off his celebrity. That kind of ego does not deserve to be stroked.

I just got back from seeing Glass. Loved it. Fucking awful. Shyamalan has the balls, the courage to make this kind of thing and he stands alone.
