Seriously, what a garbage choice. The story is a tired trope that might just seem clumsy in some years, but in 2019 seems outright tone deaf. In an age where racism is still very much alive and well - we don't need another "let's all just get along" feel good take on race. I mean, it's a nice sentiment, but it also seems like a cop out. The topic of race in the United States needs hard reflection, hard questions, and hard answers. It doesn't need to be glossed over. The win is especially galling because there actually was a film in BlacKkKlansman that took a real look at racism in the country and that did ask hard questions of the viewer. A Driving Miss Daisy for the new age. I must say I haven't seen it but that's kind of the impression I get and yeah there seems to be a bias against Spike Lee. And holy shit I'm just realizing Driving Miss Daisy also beat Do the Right Thing.

I think Spike had a reason to be upset - and I don't think it was because his film lost - I think it was because his film lost to a film that is so tone deaf when it comes to race. People don't like having to confront ugly issues like racism - they prefer tough subject like that sugarcoated and made to feel good so there's no guilt - hey, everything is cool, but isn't it just so sad how poorly black people used to be treated?

I finally watched Blackkklansman yesterday and it was fantastic. It really did deserve to win - I haven't seen Green Book, but I have an irrational hatred for Viggo Mortensen (you just know he treated Exene like shit), so I won't see it. The only thing I found distracting was that it supposedly took place in Colorado Springs, but it was so obviously filmed elsewhere (upstate NY? Canada?). A stupid thing to be distracted by, but I was distracted nonetheless.
