Re: The Dictator observations thread.
If capitalism is so great, why are more people miserable and frustrated? If the very nature of the system is to produce fewer and fewer winners and more and more losers, is that something worth celebrating and maintaining? To me, the pressure is more on the free marketers' side to justify why this should continue when its effects are demonstrably unfair and accelerating, rather than us to justify this socialist or anarchist model or that.Silent Majority wrote: ↑22 Jan 2018, 11:03amFar far worse than the Gilded Age, worse than 1916 Russia. LBJ, everyone:
Making a speech on economics is a lot like pissing down your leg. It seems hot to you, but it never does to anyone else.

I may have mentioned this once before, but a former friend of mine, his brother-in-law is CHP, and some of his friends on the force would go out into the desert, put on old German WWII uniforms (replicas, I assume) and go shooting at shit. Even if that's weird fantasy, a cop who fantasizes about being a Nazi is fifteen kinds of fucked up.

Re: The Dictator observations thread.
Just musing over online discussion regarding the Boushie/Stanley trial in Saskatchewan, where a white farmer (Stanley) killed a First Nation's kid on his property. I realize/hope that a lot of the tough talk is just the bravado of the anonymous, but I do wonder what kind of society they'd like to have. To say that someone deserves to die for trespassing and/or burglary? That that was a just outcome? The right likes to bring up the boogeyman of sharia law, but even that doesn't go so far as to demand capital punishment for theft. That kind of extreme punishment for relatively minor offences is straight out of death camps or totalitarian states. If they could overhaul the criminal code, would they really want to make property crimes capital offences? And to empower vigilantes to carry out the act before any kind of trial? Could they look at their kid, sibling, or friend and say, "If you steal something, you deserve to die"? That people entertain such madness terrifies me. The elevation of property—a goddamned thing—over a life is utterly debased. It's hard not to see that as some form of collective mental illness.

Figured he was an Elliot Rodger type given the day he chose. Rodger is much admired among the misogynists that make up the alt right.

Re: The Dictator observations thread.
In "first as tragedy, then as farce" news …
So, as I've mentioned before (because it's my current research focus), back in the 50s, many Americans, especially on the right, were fearful/convinced that the Commies, Russian and Chinese, were using a variety means to brainwash or otherwise indoctrinate Americans. This included popular media like movies, television, and music. It was complete bullshit, of course.
Flash forward to the second decade of the 21st century, where there's clear evidence of Russian agents using social media—advertising and bots—to persuade mainly Americans on the right to vote for a particular candidate. Those on the right, however, largely dismiss this as, well, brainwashing by mysterious forces on the left.
It is to laugh. And cry. But also laugh.
