I always try to watch, even when W was prez, but not this time. I watched a very screamy King Kong instead. Much scream. So noise. :meh:

That earlier disco-y version of "Girls on Film" is great.

When I was a Top 40 simpleton, I absolutely loved Seven and the Ragged Tiger. Played the cassette until the ink rubbed off. When I dl'd it a few years back to see whether it held up … it did not. At all.
I thought it was shit at the time. Horribly over produced.

Very much so. But, as they say, that was the style at the time. LeBon's singing also seemed to be driven by a desire to express no less than fifteen emotions with every word. You're a mediocre pop singer, guy—don't emphasize your limitations.

I didn't watch either. I watched my dvr'd Jeopardy and House Hunters International.

My favorite Duran Duran song is Save a Prayer. I think it's a beautiful sounding song and also has that sleazy 80s eurotrash vibe to it.

I like the debut and Rio. I wasn't as keen on Seven. I remember liking their 90s record with the big singles.

of course my heart is with Depeche, which a friend described as "the evil Duran Duran."

He also called Nick Cave the evil Leonard Cohen. It's a solid classification system.

I'll never forget your classifying Jonathan Richman the non-evil Lou Reed.

ah yes.

It works for albums too. For example, Fire Dances is the evil Kings of the Wild Frontier.

My non-scientific ranking of Duran Duran's studio albums from worst to best:

15. Thank You (I actually enjoyed a few tracks - but why was this product needed?)
14. Pop Trash (I almost put this in last. Songs are bland. If there had not been a reunion of the "Fab Five" this would have been the end of the road.)
13. Liberty (Trying to remain relevant - so I give them something for the effort and they manage a couple of really good songs.)
12. Red Carpet Massacre (A botched experiment, but sounds like a bunch of old dudes trying to sound young. I would like to hear the original version - called Reportage - that was shelved.)
11. Medazzaland (This one starts out really strong, but fades down the stretch.)
10. Astronaut (As a reunion of the original 5 - this should have been better, and while pleasant enough - lacks guts.)
09. Duran Duran #2 (Couple of big hits, but rest of album is so-so. Always thought this one was overrated.)
08. Notorious (Underrated. Some great playing. They almost sound funky. A lost gem.)
07. Paper Gods (Pretty darned good. Bringing back Nile Rodgers was a good move. They sound vital and current while still sounding classic.)
06. So Red the Rose (I know this is technically an Arcadia release, but it belongs in this ranking. Arty, pretentious, overproduced, but some really top notch songs.)
05. Duran Duran #1 (The "night" versions of many of these songs were better, but a promising debut.)
04. Big Thing (Maybe a controversial pick, but I've always liked this album. It has a nice mix of harder dance songs and smooth ballads.)
03. Seven and the Ragged Tiger (A rush job for sure, but enough momentum to make something out of nothing.)
02. All You Need is Now (Wow. Fantastic late career album. This is when they found themselves again.)
01. Rio (Was there ever any doubt? Classic from start to finish.)

Better to follow Jefferson's example of sending a report to Congress rather than emulate the egoism of that old racist Wilson holding court.
What do you think of Joe Kennedy giving the rebuttal? I’ve liked him for a couple of years, but I’ve seen some criticism because he’s seen (by some) as the same old, same old. I really like him, though.
He’s got some incredibly gross ties to the pharma industry and is hideously bad on any illegal drug issues. He can take a leap.
Good to know and somewhat sad. Oh well...
I can admit to being somewhat less informed than I should be. Between being a dad for two small humans and working a full time job - I can be guilty of not digging into the details. I’ve heard some of Kennedy’s rebuttals to the GOP and they make for good soundbites. I really kind of wanted to believe in him and to be honest - I’ll do my own digging tomorrow - but really too bad.
I think you're gonna be hard pressed to find any politician that's admirable.

I always thought, at least with the first two albums, DD really wanted to be Japan. That being said, their bassist is a monster.

Or, more precisely, any politician at the national level. The closer you get to the local level, the better and more sincere the people. The respectability and interest in service of any politician decreases as their electoral constituency increases.
