Technically Steinem is second-wave feminism...but, yeah, first in any Boomer's own mind. "Third-wave" feminism of the 90's exists because the second-wavers did such craptacular amounts of self-damage siloizing themselves and using their ammo all on each other. It was the hostility and intolerance towards sex-positive voices that was the finally the breaking point for Gen X. They did not want to hear another lecture on passing the Equal Rights Amendment; they wanted to stop getting slut-shamed from their elders on "pornography is rape". Because heaven forbid girls can be completely comfortable with themselves about liking porn and sex, but still not be hypocrites for wanting a modicum of safety in the world.BostonBeaneater wrote:I blame boomers for many problems. And, yes, there's now a fourth-wave. Because the third-wave (like most X'er-led movements) took such heavy casualties from the viciousness of the Boomers' attacks that they...well, ended up on the trash heap with the rest of their generation.
Steinem's been doing this in-step with her own generation for 40 years now. Maybe the fact that it's kind of sadly expected and barely worth the eyeroll says all that needs to be said about what she's been doing from her ivory tower of privilege. She's a Boomer, and there's still a smidge of earth behind them that hasn't been totally scorched. Do what comes natural.

The Boomers' collective headstone will read "Apres nous rien." They'll think it's a compliment.

I've mentioned before that female academics with whom I've talked to about this (including the wife, obviously) have experienced a higher expected standard of competence for respect. Some of the comments below the piece mention that male students are bolder to talk in class than female. That hasn't been my experience. Some classes the guys are more talkative, others it's the gals. The more common thing is that nobody wants to talk one way or the other.

Nice reminder to women: Yeah, you've been horribly violated, but shut the fuck up or rich men can make it so much worse and so much longer. There are just so many spots in that whole ugly affair where you want to hit pause and ask various men in power, "What the fuck is wrong with you?"

Gotta love when Republicans go on about big government, then use a higher level of government to overrule more local levels.

These accusations are, unfortunately, too difficult to prove beyond doubt. I am of the belief that where there is smoke and fire there is probably a fire. Once the accusers begin grow in number it is hard to deny that he probably did it. I don't think this is the kind of problem that is solved by courts. I think it drives to the core of what men think being a man is. For many it means making boatloads of money and treating women like property. I don't know how we change that.Dr. Medulla wrote:Ugh, Ghomeshi not guilty on all counts.

For one, raising boys to feel ashamed of treating women like shit. Public shaming is one thing, but it's more effective when it's generated internally.BostonBeaneater wrote:These accusations are, unfortunately, too difficult to prove beyond doubt.
