While doing a whole lot of book scanning the past week, I finally got around to listening to the second series of Slate's Slow Burn. The first was about Watergate and the second about Clinton's impeachment. So much stuff I'd forgotten about. The bile in my throat for Bill Clinton was immense, followed by what happened to Monica Lewinsky (e.g., Bill fucking Maher calling her a homewrecker who should apologize to the Clintons). And as persuaded as I am that Clinton raped Juanita Broaddrick, it was pretty appalling to learn that she's a gung-ho anti-immigrant Trump person who also accused Christine Blasey Ford of lying about her attempted rape. So many monsters in that story. (And speaking of, I learned that Ann Coulter is a Grateful Dead fan. As if I needed any other reason not to listen to them.)

Really, the only decent person to come out of this whole thing is my doppelganger, Ms. Lewinsky. And she seems to be doing really well, which I am very happy about. I hate how she was treated.

One of the outcomes of MeToo is that she's finally no longer a punchline and instead a symbol of both what happens to women, especially around powerful men, and demonstrating that you can recover your dignity and become a figure of respect. I look back at it and am borderline amazed she didn't kill herself given all the ridicule.

Oh, forgot to mention, I found it darkly amusing that Clinton was likely saved from impeachment by all the insane conspiracy theories dreamed up by the right (e.g., murdering Vince Foster). The right's willingness to uncritically buy into every loopy idea about the man actually limited their persuasiveness with the general public about the shit he actually did do and should have gone to jail for.

It's like mixing chocolate with peanut butter, except the chocolate is diarrhea and the peanut butter is vomit.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/ ... men-killed

Thirty years and it feels like these kinds of incidents are becoming more common. It seemed like such a freak episode at the time—and statistically it was—but now it seems like prologue. I've often wondered about how the fifty men who just walked out reflect on their (in)actions. I try not to judge them too harshly as individuals—self-preservation instinct and all—but collectively I can't help but regard them as bastards who let their classmates and fellow human beings be slaughtered. A moment of real and symbolic failure.

That Chris Matthews continues to exist and be employed to offer opinions should serve as a huge alarm that the ship is way off-course.

Didn’t realise Karen was a thing outside NZ 😂
Here it is more about the haircut than the name.
