Just saw this on Joe's official Facebook page. Is there a full recording of "Rose of Erin"? And what session was it from? Joe looks to be pre-Mescaleros, what with his hair and lean-ness...

Yep all of the tracks are out there that is from the When Pigs Fly soundtrack 1983.

15 years today (err, yesterday now)... on that day i was a senior in high school. was xmas shopping at the mall with my two best friends when my friend's mom called him to tell him. two years ago i spent a night walking around to all joe's old haunts. tonight i went to visit the mural (awful as it was) to find it's gone! so i ending up heading over to joe's old squat near edgware rd station ("joe strummer subway"). RIP joe.
I wanted to have a “brew for breakfast” this morning (yesterday was a work day) but also, you just can’t find it in the US (which is crazy because we have to be kings of potent gut rot beer). I did grab some Carlsberg Elephant last night (I crazily enough found that at a large chain grocery store)...so I had one of those instead.

i grew up in the US and for so long i thought "brew for breakfast" referred to beer, but now i'm pretty certain it's tea :/

*1993

the whole album is available for download on some blogs, and much or all of it is on youtube. but of course the best song by far is rose of erin, and some kind fella/lady uploaded it as well as the vocal track here viewtopic.php?t=10606. i think it may be the most perfect expression of joe's talents, a distillation of everything he ever did.

Very possibly! I always associated the line with the Special Brew swilling Ray Gagne! :mrgreen:

It’s definitely referring to beer, though a brew does commonly refer to tea it wouldn’t make s lot of sense in the context of the song I think.

From Gregg McDonald on Facebook;

15 years ago I was a runner at P3 in Soho who was making my 'proper gander' films for the FBU with fireman Alan Miles in support of their National strike action over pay and working conditions. At the end of their first 48 hour walkout I finished my shift on the tea, biscuits and bento boxes and headed to Acton Town Hall to film and meet Joe Strummer, who was about to play his last ever London show before his tragically premature death a month later...15 years ago this week.

Although this film about that now historic night was never broadcast and someone annoyingly nicked the name Proper Gander soon after it was shown at Glastonbury the following year, it jettisoned me towards my career in making films for trade unions and their many incredible campaigns in the defence and protection of workers and human rights (under the moniker of Consequential Films) of which I am very proud.

So thank you Joe. You were the real deal. As Billy says...you walked it like you talked it and died on top of your game.

Someone chucked it up on YouTube in 4 rude and blurry parts many years ago but here it is in its full naive splendour...with 3 openings and about 4 endings! Enjoy (if you choose to download it!)🎸
