My lone gripe is that I question how much Joe input there really was. Apparently he came up with chord changes and probably melodies, but it so far removed from everything else he has done, it seems like the musicians should have gotten more credit.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

If Permanent Record is pub rock, then I have nothing against the genre. PR contains some of Joe's best work.
