It begs the question why Paul was sent upstairs by Sandy Pearlman in rehearsals to learn the GEER songs.WestwayKid wrote: ↑16 Oct 2017, 4:07pmCurious to know all of your thoughts on his claim that Paul only played bass on the first album. I know Norman Watt-Roy filled in at least on Sandinista - but thought that was a scheduling thing. Also - I believe Vince claims Paul's bass amp was always turned way down on stage.Heston wrote: ↑16 Oct 2017, 2:57pmHis book is a good read but is definitely exaggerated.WestwayKid wrote: ↑16 Oct 2017, 1:39pmVince is definitely a character. A thread here from a few years back discussing what Paul may/may not have played...WestwayKid wrote: ↑16 Oct 2017, 4:07pmCurious to know all of your thoughts on his claim that Paul only played bass on the first album. Re: Marky Dread Remasters
I believe Nick generally played low-end and chordal leads/solos, Vince played the other stuff. That particular White Man doesn't sound great, but they were pretty good most of the time. Check out Mag 7 from St. Louis 1984.matedog wrote: ↑16 Oct 2017, 2:10pmRight and it comes through in their playing. Vince cops to it as well in his book. Nick's playing and singing is generally tight as is Pete's. Vince is usually mixed really low, though he claims he did get some solos, usually the more languid (ie easy) solos. I think if the rhythm guitar is still prominent, chances are Vince is soloing. Haven't review it too much though.Marky Dread wrote: ↑16 Oct 2017, 1:47pmWell don't forget Pete was already a Clash member while Mick was still in the band. Nick Sheppard had been the guitarist in punk band The Cortinas so the only real novice of sorts was Vince.WestwayKid wrote: ↑16 Oct 2017, 1:39pmYeah, I also just gave this one a spin. Some of the playing is rough. The guitar playing in general isn't great...but then you're going from Mick/Joe to Vince & Nick and Bernie just took these kids who had never played in a large venue and just chucked them out there. It was just a mess from beginning to end - poorly thought out and poorly carried out. I do think they got better as time went on - but it was just never going to work.
Vince is definitely a character. I've never had the chance to read his book. Is the story about him shagging Bernie's girlfriend in a parking lot true - or just a rock legend. I like to think it was true, ha ha!

I'll eat hay with a donkey if Paul played that bassline on White Riot. Even Wyatt struggles with itWestwayKid wrote: ↑16 Oct 2017, 4:07pmCurious to know all of your thoughts on his claim that Paul only played bass on the first album. I'm now hooked watching Wyatt's videos! He does a pretty good job on White Riot - but wow - when you actually watch someone playing it you realize how difficult the bass part is - so many moving parts go into it.white man wrote: ↑17 Oct 2017, 5:10amI'll eat hay with a donkey if Paul played that bassline on White Riot. Probably. Certainly wasn't Wyatt cos he'd have mastered the bastard by now.WestwayKid wrote: ↑17 Oct 2017, 8:39amI'm now hooked watching Wyatt's videos! Yeah wow. I knew some of the off beat stuff in the chorus, but that bass line really moves around a ton throughout.WestwayKid wrote: ↑17 Oct 2017, 8:39amI'm now hooked watching Wyatt's videos! Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

He's got several Clash bass and guitar videos. Wow. Fascinating to watch someone just play the parts. Another fun one to watch is "Down in the Tube Station" - he even gets the Bruce Foxton jump in there.matedog wrote: ↑17 Oct 2017, 10:27amYeah wow. What is interesting is we've heard for so long how punk musicians were not musicians. We all know that is not true - but watching these clips really helps underscore how good these guys were - inventive, creative - highly skilled.

You do all realize that Mick played guitar and bass at the same time when The Clash performed live. Seriously Paul plays bass on White Riot.
