Re: Balanced GEER article
To be honest the idea of subjecting myself to music criticism as an adult seems like utter masochism.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

Getting accused of being a caveman by someone who listens to KISS, ah.

(what constitutes a sell-out) Mick Jones: "What happens is all the tickets go on sale for a concert, right, and people go and buy them, and if as many go and buy them as there are tickets, that constitutes a sell-out.“ ..sage :o)
......I think with 40 years hindsight and 20-20 vision most people could come to that 'Get into this' conclusion, at the time most people are making it up as they go along, personally I was 17 at time of release of Give em enough rope, the subject matter at the time was too complex and deeply social for my brain, (I managed to catch up with it though) what did I know?, what I did know and realise was that the music had changed, the sonics and the song writing, very different to self titled debut, but if you were expecting self titled 2 you were sorely dissapointed, I only saw The Clash once and that was on the parole tour they did a clutch of nights at what used to be the Music Machine in Camden Town, with Suicide and The Specials, phenomenal for a 17 year old, they were all brilliant and I can remember Alan Vega having a tug of war with the audience who got hold of his mike cable, remember The Clash were dynamite energy, flag backdrops, ....The Clash have proven with each album they released that they never stood still artistically.
Theres a saying that goes, if someone never makes mistakes then they make nothing, it took me a while to figure out what that ment.
I can't be critical of a band that for the most part wore their hearts on their sleeve, record sleeve or otherwise

Ok but here's the true test: GEER or CR? Re: Balanced GEER article
Hello,
I wasn't swayed at all by thee later poster :
The 'which album I prefer' question is the only time I've been asked to make a call on which album I'd personally chose and it did throw me a bit, ...as I'd not discovered this forum until recently (through other interests of music) or read much into other peoples preferences but I'm sure its generated its fair share of debate, my personal choice between the two albums and the reasons I weighed up from personal buttons being pushed by the albums in question, I'd go for Give em Enough Rope because I find the album more immediate and straight forward, the triumvirate opening of Safe European home, English Civil War and Tommy Gun hooks you in, Julies been working for the Drug Squad is rollickin' fun & lyrically incisive (to these ears), 'Stay Free' is like an arm around you from a big brother or good mate, all subjects covered still relevent today.
Thats not to dismiss Combat Rock, I personally love diverse music, even avant Garde (to a degree), I do non structures in music, I do dense cryptic lyrics, collaborations, I Love the tracks on Combat Rock and the subject matter with all it musical styles, can you believe that there was almost just a 5 year span from Self titled to Combat Rock, I find that unbelievable. Previously stated the band never stood still artistically but the difference between the start album and the finish album (for that line up) is incredible, & trail blazing in every way, the album title of 'Combat Rock' sums up its 'World view' aesthetic but it could also be the internal struggle & relationship between Strummer & Jones at that time.
Before the release of GEER The Clash put out Complete Control, Clash City Rockers and White Man (in Hammersith Palais) all these not included on the album, but those tracks gave you a sense of expectation for the album, I can remember being a bit lost on initial hearings of GEER because of the shift but that is the magic of music, you grow with it or leave it, as an aside the lyric to Career opportunities changed my life to go for another job when I was 17, I do remember one morning having a shave and thinking about those lyrics, my employment at the time as a General Dogs body in an engineering factory in early 78' South East London, in the days when there was plenty of work about, I handed my notice in and a week later started work in a printing associated job which turned out to be a good move for me.
I take my music seriously unless your name's happens to be Dread Zeppelin :o)

You'd be hard pushed to find three better openers than SEH ECW and TG on any album. For me it's the best produced album in their catalogue. Closely followed by CR.
One wonders what Sandinista would have sounded like in Sandy Pearlman or Glyn Johns hands.

Re: Balanced GEER article
That would be interesting, you know the demise of The Clash I suppose proved that the core of Strummer & Jones was the force that pushed them forward, due to different reasons the drummers rotated in the band, not to sure how much Paul contributed to the musical output but he was consistant within the band, when that core was broken it produced a pale shadow of a once great band, Give em enough rope does stand up on his own but I suppose at the time they couldn't put those three preceding Killer singles on due to the restrictions of the LP format and the bands ideology of value for money, until someone came up with the 2/3 LP format, I suppose The Clash being tagged a Punk band at the time had to release a single album because Punk was short and sharp, they certainly changed the game from then on.
I do really like the concept of Rat Patrol and appreciate that it has been reconstructed as its original idea, I actually prefer that reimagination of Rat Patrol from Fort Bragg to Combat Rock as a commercial entity, I think Mick took the blueprint of innoculted city as a basis for his BAD prroject, I can certainly hear that style on the BAD debut and it wouldn't be out of place either.
