if i hadn't already committed to 78 for political board reasons, i'd pick 79 or 80, probably.
I’d probably pick ‘77, but yeah, I’ve made my commitment.

Here's another one from that photo session apparently. Looks like a casting for My Own Private Idaho.

You gotta start somewhere I guess but I think they look crap.

I do like this look from early '79.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Is it me or did the band seem to look healthier and more muscular in 1981-2?
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Yeah they were scrawny looking fuckers during the punk years. But I expect they took more speed then also.

The way they looked in 1978 was as though 1976/77 never happened.

They each seemed to have regressed to their pre-Clash days look?

I actually like the stripped-down '83 "steal from the merch table instead of doing laundry on the bus" look quite a lot. Very college radio. At some point you reach the stage of just being over it on choice of designer trousers, and that was probably the right choice for trying to carve a credible path through that fashion disaster of a musical era.

Image

First casual Clash II photo shoot on the street in Dec. '83 follows similar 'off-shelf' vein. Then I presume Bernie started getting all involved, and. . . :yuck:

I agree that look works just great for the band at this stage. But then onwards to disaster and oblivion. I wonder whose idea it was to go back to basics with a touch of mad max.

Thinking back it is funny how quickly that early punk look
of spiked hair, bondage trousers, safety pins and razor blades looked dated. The ‘fans’ stuck with for a while but as the Pistols imploded and Clash moved on with the other major players, it sort of became redundant. This was obviously expediated by the shift to 2 Tone in 79.
It had a very short shelf life.

The look was kind of dated before a lot of the punk bands got off the ground. It became lether jackets and t-shirts very quickly. This is the punk uniform which was kind of a shame as it had been so original. It worked brilliantly for The Ramones giving that gang feel but too many others copied the look from Sid onwards.
