Yes but it dates back further to old black and white movie villains. I'm not certain of it's origin but it's well old. Maybe even further back to theatre shows.

On a different not I understand during Joe Ely's time in England with the Clash in1978 the gigs at the Hope and Anchor club were recorded along with gigs at other venues. Is this true and if so are they available?

Jesus, man. You don't have to x-post this to every thread.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Not sure if this is common knowledge, but I literally just found out that Joe sings "Anger is power" on Clampdown as opposed to Mick's "Anger can be power" which seems to overpower Joe in the mix.

Good spot matey. Does Joe sing Anger is a power?

Joe sings "anger is". Mick sounds double tracked which might be why he's a little more up front in the mix. Kory or Hes might have better insight.

Observation:
although it was always brilliant, they always played "White Riot" too fast with Topper. My fave version is the live one from the UK s/t album, but why did Paul never play that bumping bassline on the single version? Could it be true that Mick actually played the bass parts on the debut LP? I think Marcus Grey hinted that that could have been the case...but then didn't Simon Humphries, the CBS studio engineer, say no - the full band deffo played all the tracks live. Hmmm...
