Um, I hate to reveal my ignorance, but I've never heard of this song.

Can anyone point me to a download link?

Thanks.

It's on the "Strummer B-sides, Rarities and Live Cuts" compilation that SlickGonzalez posted a few weeks back, the link is still active...

It's a big file but great to have all this Strummer stuff in one place. I love "Over the Border", the track he did with Jimmy Cliff, that one had somehow passed me by.

Is that file still available? I don't know if it's gone or my connection that's at fault, but I can't locate it.

Any advances on this? What a great fucking song, one of Joe's best solo efforts for me.

In this town, that's the way it goes.
Say seven words for the sailors
Over out on the sea
But there ain't no saint just for killers
No mama don't to pray for me
But I was blown here by the wind
A rusty city left unnamed
The dusty singing cowboy died here
He's still doing tombstone things
And he knew how hard it was to cry
This evil darling, the deep blue sky
To be the rain in a dying man's eye
On the black poor water you get no reply
Beg for mercy and laughter fills the sky
Dog Town
Mourning, she cries.
The flight of eagles hurls you round and around
Dog Town
Got no fruit for acid rain
Go see if the coffin kid's got a lid that bears your name
In this town, that's the way-ay-ay-aaaaay it goes.
You've heard of lamp-lit haciendas
With warning-eyed girls who harmonize
But the senoritas you've befriended
Cut's die in the mirrors of their eyes
She sent seven shotgun shells
Into the netherworld of Hell
She slaughtered 95 white chickens
So you can never break the spell
Follow her down boy
And you're bound to die
Down in canyons
Beyond the blind people's eye
She'll leave your bones
In the hunting ground
Apache war dead
Got in your soul
Dead like a rock
Never more to roll
Dog Town
Mourning, she cries.
Barrels from the shotgun blaze past right between your eyes
Dog Town
Got no food for acid rain
Go see if the coffin kid's got a lid that bears your name
Dog Town
Mourning, she cries.
Barrels from the shotgun blared past right between your eyes
Bad dreams boys of my last night's Dog Town fight
Go see if the coffin kid's got a box to fill your size.
In this town, that's the way-ay-ay-aaaaay it goes

Thanks Heston, I've listened to it reading your transcript and got all the words now. I've always loved this song, but just got kind of lost in the meaning some times, although just enjoyed the vibe (maan!).

It's still not perfect mate, but nearly there. The official lyrics seem to have fallen down a hole, a bit like the Cut the Crap lyrics.

A pity, although for the latter, not a great loss.

Woah!
In this town, that's the way-ay-ay-aaaaay it goes.
Say seven words for the sailors
Over out on the sea
But there ain't no saint just for killers
No mamma's gonna pray for me
Well I was blown here by the wind
The risky city left her name
The dust is singing 'cowboy died here'
But he's still reading the tombstone names
And knew how hard it was to cry
This evil darling, the deep blue sky
To be the rake in a dying man's ire
Under grapple order we get no revive
Beg for mercy and laughter fills the sky
Dog Town
Mourning, she cries.
This life is easier where you run holes in your eyes
Dog Town
Java fruit from acid rain
Go see if the coffin kid's got a lid that bears your claim
In this town, that's the way-ay-ay-aaaaay it goes.
You've heard of lamp-lit haciendas
With one-eyed girls who harmonize
But the senoritas you've befriended
Jewell's die in the mirrors of their eyes
She shot seven shotgun shells
Into the netherworlds of Hell
She slaughtered 95 white chickens
So you can never break the spell
Gonna blow down boy
And you're bound to die
Down in canyons
Beyond the blind people's eye
She'll leave your bones
In the hunting ground
Apache war dead
Guarding your soul
Dead like a rock
Never more to roll
Dog Town
Mourning, she cries.
Barrels from the shotgun blare pass right between your eyes
Dog Town
Java fruit from acid rain
Go see if the coffin kid's got a lid that bears your name
Dog Town
Mourning, she cries.
Barrels from the shotgun blare pass right between your eyes
Bad dream boy 'bout my last night's Dog Town fight
Go see if the coffin kid's got a box that'll do your size.
In this town, that's the way-ay-ay-aaaaay it goes

I made a few adjustments/suggestions mate, it's definitely getting there. Good work on the additions, loads of them sound better...

Say seven words for the sailors
Over out on the sea
But there ain't no saint just for killers
No mamma's gonna pray for me Sounds like "don't" to me
Well I was blown here by the wind
The risky city left her name Not sure about this bit, sounds like "to the rusty city left unmamed" to my ears.
The dust is singing 'cowboy died here'
But he's still reading the tombstone names
And knew how hard it was to cry
This evil darling, the deep blue sky
To be the rake in a dying man's ire Doesn't sound like ire, it's something like "die" but that doesn't make sense.
Under grapple order we get no revive On the cry for water you get no reply?
Beg for mercy and laughter fills the sky
Dog Town
Mourning, she cries.
This life is easier where you run holes in your eyes Sounds like "round in your eyes" to me but again, doesn't make a lot of sense.

Jewell's die in the mirrors of their eyes Sounds to me like "cos" or "cut"s rather than jewells
She shot seven shotgun shells
Into the netherworlds of Hell
She slaughtered 95 white chickens
So you can never break the spell
Gonna blow down boy gonna put her down boy
And you're bound to die
Down in canyons
Beyond the blind people's eye

Guarding your soul
Dead like a rock
Never more to roll

Barrels from the shotgun blare pass right between your eyes
Dog Town
Java fruit from acid rain I think he says "guava" the second time.
Go see if the coffin kid's got a lid that bears your name
