That actually happened to my wife when she was a kid. A neighbor nabbed her pet chicken and cooked it. Even shared it with her without her knowledge.BostonBeaneater wrote: ↑14 Jan 2018, 4:46amHow was supper?revbob wrote: ↑13 Jan 2018, 10:34pmPosting in the neighborhood forum:

Undoubtedly a little twisted. But we're talking 3rd world so circumstances were a little different.

Farm people have very different attitudes towards animals (understandable, mostly, given their way of life). When the boss and I were preparing to move to North Carolina, we were at a family reunion (my family), and various uncles, all of them retired farmers, assumed we'd be getting rid of our cats and did not understand whatsoever our attachment to them.

Re: Return of the Mighty Observations Thread
There was a guy in my office earlier for our monthly Lunch and Learn, and he was talking to me like we knew each other (he knew my name, etc.). I have no idea who he was. Is anyone else as bad as I am with names and faces?

I have met many of my wife's friends and colleagues for the first time on multiple occasions. I'm decentish with faces, inasmuch as my brain tells me, "That person is not a complete stranger." But names? Fuhgedaboutit.

I never forget a face but names is another matter.
I have a phobia about calling someone by their name in case I get it wrong. It is worse the better I know them even though I KNOW their name.

Re: Return of the Mighty Observations Thread
Ha! I'm the same way, but not because I fear getting their name wrong. It's probably a weird emotional disfunction with me about not getting too close to people. When I'm leading a seminar discussion, I have to force myself to use students' names. More often than not, I just gesture to them and say, "Go ahead."101Walterton wrote: ↑18 Jan 2018, 3:29pmI never forget a face but names is another matter.

I just realized who this guy was. I worked extensively with him on a grant proposal last year. I didn't recognize him at all. I tell VH all the time that he's lucky I recognize him.

Horrible with names, great with faces. Horrible with names...except for the dogs in the neighborhood. Don't remember the owner's names, tho.
