God save me from the morons who leave comments on Debussy's piano pieces on youtube.

I shudder to think what kind of comments that commie Shostakovich gets.

Apparently Debussy is so harsh and dissonant that he makes people sick.
I'm utterly baffled.

That really just has to be people who are devoted only to romantic era music and before, right? I can't imagine anyone living in the 21st century thinking that.

I mean, predating Debussy, you've got a high level of dissonance in Wagner and Scriabin.Kory wrote: ↑11 May 2018, 2:58pmThat really just has to be people who are devoted only to romantic era music and before, right? I can't imagine anyone living in the 21st century thinking that.

Pachelbel, obviously. I know Debussy was a bit controversial when he was active, but that's kind of silly. I'd be interested to see if these same folks comment on Stravinsky or something.eumaas wrote: ↑11 May 2018, 2:59pmI mean, predating Debussy, you've got a high level of dissonance in Wagner and Scriabin.Kory wrote: ↑11 May 2018, 2:58pmThat really just has to be people who are devoted only to romantic era music and before, right? Who would have laid any money on this becoming a worldwide hit?
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

If U2 had been fatally electrocuted at Red Rocks and they would be legends in my eyes. Watching the gig now for the first time in ages, they were an incredible live entity at this point.

I've never heard any really early HL, but I understand that they operated in the same circles as Cabaret Voltaire at the time.

Re: The Mighty Musical Observations Thread
The complete show on DVD (minus one song that was unusable because two dolly cameras crashed into each other) is one of the best concert films ever. I saw them a couple weeks before Red Rocks on the 'War' tour in '83 at Northrop Auditorium on the niversity of Minnesota campus. Two songs in, after "Out of Control" and "An Cat Dubh", Bono tells the audience to come down front to the orchestra pit, and it was a bum rush like I'd never seen before or after, even with the Clash. The security dudes were literally doing the "woah!" gesture and just fucked right off. It was an incredibly intense and atmospheric show, and you could see why people were saying they were the heirs to the Clash (who I think were a little nervous of them at the Us Festival a couple months later).
