Went to see the Old Firm Casuals the other night (Lars from Rancid's side project), they were pretty awful. Way too loud and Lars delegated loads of vocals to the bass player who just shouted without any melody whatsover.

I watched one of their vids on youtube just last week and thought it was okay (Lars vocal). That said the name "Old Firm Casuals" is shit as the band dress as skinheads and the Casuals were anything but. Why take an old football name for your band. It's as if that gives the band an authentic football hooligan feel but it's just so dumb.

Agreed, I think he's trying too hard with all that, it comes across as naff. There is a track with a sampled "Who are ya?" football chant and it just makes me cringe.Marky Dread wrote: ↑10 Feb 2019, 7:18pmI watched one of their vids on youtube just last week and thought it was okay (Lars vocal). Not sure but the Old Firm Casuals seem to be taking priority these last few years.

That Libertines line about an Englishman in a baseball cap is how I feel about Americans who don’t really understand Football Culture but try to mimic the trappings.Heston wrote: ↑10 Feb 2019, 7:39pmAgreed, I think he's trying too hard with all that, it comes across as naff. That line always makes me smile especially as it's produced by one Mick Jones an Englishman renowned for wearing baseball caps with BAD.Wolter wrote: ↑10 Feb 2019, 8:03pmThat Libertines line about an Englishman in a baseball cap is how I feel about Americans who don’t really understand Football Culture but try to mimic the trappings.Heston wrote: ↑10 Feb 2019, 7:39pmAgreed, I think he's trying too hard with all that, it comes across as naff. Marc Almond at the Globe in DTLA, the 1st 2/3 of the show he was playing mostly shit I didn't know and i was regretting making a last minute decision and buying a ticket at the door, but then near the end he blew the roof off with "Heat" and the best electric guitar version of "Sex Dwarf"I'd ever heard. I still think he should have let me pick the set list, but I went home happy.

The UK Subs on Thursday, which was pretty brilliant. They played the complete "Another Kind of Blues" album plus other earlier material. Probably the best gig I've seen of them. Charlie Harper was in good form, hard to believe he's turning 75 this year!

Looks like The Vapors are touring and coming to Colorado. One of the most underrated of the 80s New Wave type bands, imho. Hit single "Turning Japanese" aside, they released to very, very solid LPs. Magnets, in particular, had a great dark-ish vibe that wouldn't have been out of place being put in rotation alongside some some post-punk records.
Unfortunately, they seem to be touring as part of some 80s nostalgia crapstravaganza, which otherwise holds no appeal to me (I do not need to pay money to see Wang fucking Chung or A Flock of Seagulls). Too bad. Maybe they'll play some solo dates at smaller venues at some point, but I doubt it.

I've always wanted to see these guys. AKoB is one of the great punk records. Glad to hear they're putting on a good concert, may prioritize seeing them whenever they get near-ish me next.

The line-up has been together for a while now. They're really tight. And Charlie Harper is apparently indestructible.

I've seen the Subs loads down the years with various line-ups they've always been great live. In the 90's they rehearsed at my friends rehearsal place (Tim) which is no more than 300 yards away from my back door. I was stunned when I walked by hearing C.I.D. blaring out and thinking wow that band sounds good only to find out it was the real deal.Olaf wrote: ↑17 Feb 2019, 7:01pmThe line-up has been together for a while now. I saw the Vapors twice back in the early 80's. I have most of their recorded stuff as well. They were quite good live - enjoy yourself!
