I have argued this point many times, totally agree. Our national anthem is crap, an old British drinking song with changed lyrics celebration war

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me

It's a mix of aspirational and knowing, imho. The last verse of the 1940 version is key, imho.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑02 Mar 2019, 10:31amIf entirely contrary to the lived experience of most Americans, past and present.

Re: What Should Be the American National Anthem?
As a counter-anthem, a song of revolution and justice and the voice of the excluded, it's great—hard to be bettered in the 20th c. But it's far removed from the history of the country. At least The Star-Spangled Banner has that nasty embedded jingoism and general celebration of violence that captures much of the nation's greater narrative.Flex wrote: ↑02 Mar 2019, 12:18pmIt's a mix of aspirational and knowing, imho. I guess that gets to what you want out of a national anthem.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead
Pex Lives!

Certainly this does come down to function. Aspiration/inspiration is one route and I don't reject it (I don't think so, anyway), but I hesitate when it's not connected to the historical values of the nation.

Which is why Brazil’s national anthem is “Baby Got Back.”

I don't know about National Anthem but that's a great tune.

The end of liberty

I'll accept "This Land Is Your Land" but it has to be the Trini Lopez version.

Not sure what a win is in this instance. It seems a few people like More Than a Feeling and aren't scared to admit it.
