I’m not tremendously familiar. I read a book of his about poetry in college. It was a’ight if you ignored his politics, but didn’t stick with me.

Rendition of what it was like for a New York City white guy to go to the
police-designated drug turf black neighbourhood of Harlem to buy heroin,
from Lou Reed/Velvet Underground (1971).
Lexington Ave & 125th St is a NYC subway station which is near
the 8th Ave & 116th St Harlem Frank Lucas heroin headquarters.
Everyone in NYC, including the police, knew where
this place was:

=================I'm Waiting for My Man (1971)=======================
I'm waiting for my man
Twenty-six dollars in my hand
Up to Lexington, one, two, five
Feel sick and dirty, more dead than alive
I'm waiting for my man
Hey, white boy, what you doin' uptown?
Hey, white boy, you chasin' our women around?
Oh pardon me sir, it's the furthest from my mind
I'm just lookin' for a dear, dear friend of mine
I'm waiting for my man
Here he comes, he's all dressed in black
[Hee haw] shoes and a big straw hat
He's never early, he's always late
First thing you learn is that you always gotta wait
I'm waiting for my man, ah work it now
Up to a brownstone, up three flights of stairs
Everybody body's pinned you, but nobody cares
He's got the works, gives you sweet taste
Ah then you gotta split because you got no time to waste
I'm waiting for my man
Baby don't you holler, darlin' don't you bawl and shout
I'm feeling good, you know I'm gonna work it on out
I'm feeling good, I feel oh so fine
Until tomorrow, but that's just some other time
I'm waiting for my man, walk it home

What neighbourhoods in London were designated by the Police
as drug turf during the 1970's and/or now ?

Who knows: maybe the mayor might want to eradicate the drug dealing
in that location.
I read about a rash of stabbings in London.
Could be removing the drug dealing, removes the stabbings.

UK Drug Policy Commission, An analysis of UK drug policy, Reuter, Stevens, April 2007
========================================================
The United Kingdom has the highest level of dependent drug use and among
the highest levels of recreational drug use in Europe. The drug problem steadily
worsened over the last quarter of the twentieth century: the number of dependent
heroin users increased from around 5,000 in 1975 to a current estimated 281,000 in
England and over 50,000 in Scotland. Since the turn of the millennium, drug trends
have shown signs of stabilisation, albeit at historically high levels.
=========================================================

Evening Standard 7 April 2018
=========================================================
The statistics showed the five top hotspots for fatal heroin and morphine overdoses were:
Hackney (2.7 per 100,000 people), Haringey (2.6), Camden (2.0), Islington (1.7), and Tower Hamlets (1.6).
Tottenham MP David Lammy recently claimed the recent surge in London's violent crime was being fuelled
by McMafia style drug barons pushing hard drugs on the capital's streets.

Camden -- that rings a bell.
The Clash as a band was formed in Camden Town,
which is in Camden, and performed their rehearsals inexpensively there.
And Camden Town is mentioned in a Clash lyric
The Prisoner, B-side of White Man In Hammersmith Palais (16 June 1978):

===================The Prisoner (1978)============================
...
And I look to my left
And I look to my right
And I'm looking for a man
I'm looking for a sign
I don't want to be the prisoner
The prisoner lives in Camden Town
Selling revolution
The prisoner loads his tracking arm up
With self-disillusion
Your mother does the washing up
Your old man digs the garden
You're only free to dodge the cops
An' bunk the train to stardom

Social media is also used for drug dealing and recruiting runners by depicting lavish lifestyles perceived as unattainable through legal means.
The growing phenomenon of “county lines” drug gangs, which supply from cities into rural areas, was also cited in the report as a driver of violence because of bloody turf wars between rivals.
Statistics show that the proportion of murders in England and Wales involving known drug dealers and users rose from 50 per cent to 57 per cent between 2014-15 and 2016-17.

[Read more: Thousands of children used as drug mules by ‘county lines’ gangs]

Mr Smart [Junior Smart, of youth charity the St Giles Trust] said the vast majority of teenagers killed have been “low down on the food chain” and were being exploited by gang leaders known as elders.
“Authorities should follow the money, shut the lines down and get to the people at the top of the tree,” he added. “I was in Manchester last week and in Kent the week before – the same thing is being mirrored everywhere.
“We’ve got to remember that these are children and every life lost is a future extinguished.”

this thread is funny
I've always chuckled at the line "Yankee detectives are always on the TV, 'cause killers in America work seven days a week"! I think partly because of Joe's delivery and partly because it's still such a true reflection on America.

There is no conspiracy behind this song. Joe misheard Mick singing "I'm So Bored With You" and then subsequently rewrote it as a provocative/sarcastic look at American culture. That's all it is. The only "conspiracy" is whether Mick ripped off Steve Jones or the other way around ;)
In a video interview, Mick Jones described this song "I'm So Bored With The USA",
as the first song he and Joe Strummer worked on, and described Strummer
typing up the lyrics on a regular typewriter (this was 1977) like a journalist
and handing the lyrics to Mick to do the music.

Rock and Roll guitar playing on this song is awesome.
The similarity with the Sex Pistols Pretty Vacant intro is mild at best.
(worst song Sex Pistols ever made -- explains why the record companies and
their payola-bribed radio stations prefer it over the other tracks on Never Mind The Bollocks).

Unfortunately for The Clash, Mick Jones stopped
"practising daily in his room"
after the 2nd album (1978).
Pretty Vacant - "the worst song Sex Pistols ever made" Rotten subverting the word "cunt" in vacant. It's a bloody great song and tune and you are bat-shit crazy.

Anarchy In The UK

The first 2, it is obvious poor hapless Sid co-wrote and played on, despite the protestations of Lydon
and other remaining band members.

Obsession is a helluva drug.
The Vietcong purposely got the GIs hooked on obsession. They came back really into Star Trek.
The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia (1972), Alfred W. McCoy
======================================================================
In Vietnam heroin use is so commonplace among GIs that the traditional middle-class
American taboo toward the drug has been broken. A U.S. army survey administered to
1,000 army returnees in March 1971 showed that while only [11] percent had used heroin
regularly in Vietnam, 22 percent had tried it at least once. (245) For these men heroin is
just another narcotic like marijuana, pep pills, or alcohol. In Vietnam soldiers handle
heroin so frequently-buying it for themselves, picking up some for a buddy on duty, or
selling it for profit-that the idea of pushing heroin once they get home seems natural. "I
heard from a few guys who got off it," said one twenty-two-year-old middle American at
the Long Binh treatment center. "They said they were still off 'cause it was too expensive,
and anyway, they were scared to use the needle. But they said they wanted me to send
'em some scag [heroin] [skag] so they could sell it and make some money. You know a jug
[vial] over here only costs two dollars, but you can get a hundred dollars for it back in the
world." (246) Traveling through Asia on an investigative tour, U.S. Congressman John
M. Murphy found "numerous examples of the slick GI who gets discharged, goes home,
then comes back to set himself up in the drug traffic." (247)

Clearly, there are members of this forum who hate Joe Strummer and make up
ugly stories about him -- weird.
Well he wore raccoon hats, that's obscene.
He had an excuse: it was the drugs. (I think we've all worn raccoons in some manner while under some kind of influence.)
The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia (1972), Alfred W. McCoy
======================================================================
Although heroin addicts are outnumbered by alcoholics, heroin addiction has been much
more damaging to the fabric of American society. Alcoholism is usually a private
problem, and the anguish extends no further than the victim, his family, and his friends.
Alcohol is relatively cheap, and even the most down-and-out wino can manage to keep
himself supplied. Heroin, however, is extremely expensive, and most addicts have been
forced to turn to street crime for money to maintain their habits. One 1970 survey
estimated that the average addict in New York State had to steal $8,000 a year for his
habit, and calculated the total property lost to junkies at $580 million a year. (6) Many
urban police departments believe that the majority of petty crimes, such as mugging,
shoplifting, and burglary are committed by addicts in search of money. Predatory addicts
have turned large sections of America's inner cities into hazardous jungles, where only
well-armed police dare to venture after dark. To a large extent, the problem of crime in
the streets is a heroin problem, and most of the petty violence that has aroused so much
public apprehension would disappear overnight if the drug traffic were brought under
control.
