I finally got bitten hard by Wish after years of not caring much for it (probably the result of it living in the shadow of the previous stuff), but it got me thinking that I should reassess the other four albums that come after Disintegration that I also haven't really dug much. I'm digging this much more than my last few listens from a couple years ago. I like the Sandinista-esque genre experiments.

I think he felt like he had to create a trilogy out of Pornography and Disintegration, so it's like he wanted the concept without having the material for it. To me, the trilogy is 17/Faith/Porn.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑12 Mar 2019, 6:03pmMy recollection is that Bloodflowers sounded almost like satire of mopey goth music, right down to the album title.Kory wrote: ↑12 Mar 2019, 5:53pmI used to think that too, I'll report back—about to start Bloodflowers now.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑12 Mar 2019, 5:50pmI've tried the albums after Wish and they do absolutely nothing for me. Agreed on both counts. After Pornography, it was like he got that shit out of his system. I don't even find Disintegration as gloomy as Seventeen Seconds or Faith.Kory wrote: ↑12 Mar 2019, 6:09pmI think he felt like he had to create a trilogy out of Pornography and Disintegration, so it's like he wanted the concept without having the material for it. Bryan Ferry put out some great music in the 80's. This is my 1st "deep dive" into that part of his catalog - but I'm digging it. If you throw in Roxy's Avalon from 1982 - it's a good run.

Re: What Are you Listening to Right Now?
I think the difference between Disintegration and an album like Pornography is that Smith sounds like he's off the rails on Pornography. It's endless gloom that permeates with a feeling of just pure hopelessness that I don't know if I've ever heard/felt since. There's that live version of the track "Faith" where he literally sounds like he's coming apart. Disintegration is gloomy. It's a dark album, but it feels more controlled. I still think it's an incredible record, but it isn't as "frightening" as an album like Faith or Pornography.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑12 Mar 2019, 6:16pmAgreed on both counts. In regards to their post-Wish albums, there are some good moments - but they've struggled to sustain those moments over the course of a full record. I like a lot of Wild Mood Swings, but there are a handful of tracks that just don't do anything for me. I do agree that Bloodflowers too often sounds like Cure-by-numbers - but the formula is good enough that it is still an enjoyable listen. I do think that both The Cure and 4:13 Dream get overlooked. They're not classics - not even close - but they're solid enough late-career works that are not an embarrassment. It does, however, feel like breaking any sort of new musical ground is no longer part of the plan.

This popped into my head this morning. A fave Rancid song for sure:
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead
Pex Lives!

Flesh & Blood never seems to get much love when it comes to RM but it’s my favourite of theirs. Never realised Ferry had so many solo albums, not listened to very much of it.WestwayKid wrote: ↑13 Mar 2019, 10:10amHere's one of the highlights for you to sample. It's really a consistently good discography. I didn't get into Bryan Ferry solo until long after I'd gotten into RM - but was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed his solo work.Low Down Low wrote: ↑13 Mar 2019, 11:03amFlesh & Blood never seems to get much love when it comes to RM but it’s my favourite of theirs. Re: What Are you Listening to Right Now?
Looking at the discography between RM and solo he released 12 albums between 1972 and 1980. That’s seriously prolific by any standard. Definitely curious to check some of it out. Did hear an updated orchestral version of Dance Away recently that was kind of interesting, from one of the recent albums I’m guessing.WestwayKid wrote: ↑13 Mar 2019, 11:25amIt's really a consistently good discography. That's from Bitter-Sweet - which was released late last year. It's a bunch of remakes of some of his older solo and RM songs. It's good.Low Down Low wrote: ↑13 Mar 2019, 12:12pmLooking at the discography between RM and solo he released 12 albums between 1972 and 1980. That’s seriously prolific by any standard.
