Re: The Shoegazing Thread

Those "Alice" remixes are especially fantastic. For the most part with the music I love, I don't pause when someone else doesn't like it—no cause to judge—but I confess that not being amazed by Cocteau Twins does cause me to scratch my head a bit. I think most people don't bother to look past the s...

Re: The Shoegazing Thread

That was wonderful. Such a special record. A rare moment where a bad achieves something like commercial success (or recognition) halfway thru their career plus it's their best record. They still feel like the Beatles to me—every record has the shudder effect on me and they left well before they got...

Re: Flex and Wolter's Den of Nerdly Awesomeness

Diamond announced an indefinite cessation of new product shipping. I get the feeling they're going to use this opportunity to scale down rather drastically. Either way, this and the mandated closings are probably going to bankrupt most comics stores. Sad.

Re: The Future of the Democratic Party

All you need to know about our politics is that the establishment loves loves loves a dirty prosecutor who literally fucked her way into politics and hates a vet who dares question the warfare state.

Re: The Future of the Democratic Party

I think the Epstein thing and MeToo revealing the bourgeoisie to be a bunch of depraved perverts probably hasn’t helped trust in institutions. Since the economic crisis we have seen them cover for themselves at our expense again and again. The DNC hack also showed some pretty awful stuff (that got ...

Re: The Trump observations thread

Tim O'Brien (Bloomberg adviser) on MSNBC: "What I've said to people is when you get inside Donald Trump's head, all you're going to discover that you find there is a putter, a cheeseburger, a porn video, and somebody else's credit card."   Well, let's be frank here- Bloo...

Re: The Future of the Democratic Party

The term late capitalism covers it well (if blandly)—it saturates everything in life, reducing it all to commodity and transaction. The abstract—the quantitative value—is elevated over the real—the unique qualities, the emotional effect, the social. But the principle of capitalism is that it will e...

Re: The Future of the Democratic Party

One thing I am confident in predicting (short of some miracle technology or divine/alien intervention) is that the precepts of capitalism—of unlimited production and economic growth—cannot continue for long. All species live in a condition of scarcity. Finding enough food to survive and propagate. ...

Re: The Future of the Democratic Party

The older generation dying will never help. There'll be a whole new army of dick heads waiting to cash in and replace them. We can't sit around and wait for a generational shift - particularly when we're two generations from the planet becoming uninhabitable. I agree with this. It's long been wishf...

Re: The Future of the Democratic Party

This is why I always try to be friendly to people waiting tables and working cash registers. It's amazing how the most sour faced cashier or barista brightens when you treat them with respect. I worked plenty of those jobs myself so I know what they have to put up with. I'm glad you mentioned this....

Re: The Future of the Democratic Party

That seems a fair assessment, and probably reveals something of my own unconscious bias, as I'm more at home in an academic left (tho I still hesitate to consider myself an actual leftist, but whatever), rather than the working-class left. I know that I preferred Warren because of her age and that ...

Re: The Future of the Democratic Party

Southern California, a feudal Oligarchial hellhole, is the Rockefeller Republican Potemkin Village. Insane privilege surrounded by a permanent serf class and a desperate and destitute throng of homeless. You really have to see it for yourself to believe how dystopian it is. San Francisco and Silico...

Re: The Future of the Democratic Party

I should add that like many, many more Americans than realize it, I am actually Native American enough to admitted into some tribes (my great-grandfather was adopted from an "Indian Orphanage" by a family that couldn't have children), so the fact that Warren relied on old family lore to land an affi...
