Re: Straight to Hell - Heart, Voice & Piano

Thanks for the listen and kind words! It felt like I was studying that song all pandemic summer like a text book. Joe's lyrics are so spare and powerful. It's like zen writing.

And yea, oliver--the Elijah tragedy is beyond sad. It's hard for me to fathom that level of inhumanity.

Re: How confident are you? (Simonon content)

Yea--I really wanted to give credit to Paul playing that bass part. It's so groovy. And then part of me did wonder--is there a chance that Mick (or someone) overdubbed this at a later date? I meant to post it on the Clash discussion area, but you know...beer.

Straight to Hell - Heart, Voice & Piano

It's been a heavy summer in so many ways. I've been really sad about the death of a young man named Elijah McClain at the hands of police (8/24/19) not far from my home in Colorado, USA. There's so much inhumanity taking place everywhere. I think most of all Joe was about human beings--with hearts. ...

How confident are you? (Simonon content)

How confident are you that Paul Simonon plays the bass (without post production punch in) on the From Here to Eternity version of (White Man) in Hammersmith Palais? Curious to hear your thoughts. In any case, that is some fine dub reggae bass playing through out. I've had just two beers while the wi...

I have neglected to mention Stay Free which was a prior example of this voice.

Mick's voice on Lost in a supermarket

What's the precedent for this vocal? Had Mick ever sung so sweetly before this? He was a good punk singer on the 1st two albums. Where did this great, sensitive voice come from? Also--does anyone know how the song traveled from Joe's pen to Mick's mouth? Why did Joe give it to Mick to sing? I may ha...

Re: Best biography on The Clash and/or Strummer?

Return of the Last Gang is the best for me if you want a REALLY detailed read. It's a bit opinionated but heavy on detail. Hey--I wanted to follow up after being given so much good advice here. I'm about half way through the Marcus Gray book. And yes--SO MUCH DETAIL. Some of it--unnecessary? But th...

Re: Best biography on The Clash and/or Strummer?

Read Return of the Last Gang In Town then We Are the Clash. All your factual needs will be covered. If you want maximum detail on the 1979 period read Route 19 in between them. Then for fun read Clash City Showdown and A Riot of our Own by Johnny Green. I never quite got off on Redemption Song, I f...

Re: Best biography on The Clash and/or Strummer?

Thanks, people! I've ordered the 2nd edition of Return of the Last Gang in Town. If inspired, I may continue on with Passion is Fashion. Any thoughts about the Joe bio, Redemption Song? And yes--Less racist authors are preferred to racist ones. Vince White is a racist? How did that sit with Joe? (Ed...

Best biography on The Clash and/or Strummer?

Hey friends! Is there a definitive Clash bio or one on Joe? Some choices so far... Redemption Song Passion is Fashion Return of the Last Gang in Town Route 19 We are the Clash Any crucial ones missing from this list? (I'll read 2014's The Clash after I read a bio.) Which one of these would you recom...
