Tub book (before getting to Faces of Degeneration ): https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1320473208i/6352392.jpg I've read this before (maybe ten years ago). As I recall, it's a fun crime story with a music angle, about trying to rob the box office a...

12) Illuminations - Walter Benjamin. Paperback. 1940. It's a delight to spend time with so loving and tidy a mind. I love how pleasantly readable WB is. I can see the influence on John Berger immediately. Walter Benjamin feels like a writer from later in the century, in both ideas (cos of his influ...

Re: Hey Flex (All Encompassing 90's Glorification)

"In the Meantime" is a classic in my books and I'm glad to find out they had some other solid tunes. I kinda liked that back in the day—it caught my ear because it sampled Penguin Cafe Orchestra's "Telephone and Rubber Band" (which I only knew as the closing song of Talk Radio —but listening to it ...

Re: Thread of Dreams

What I experienced last night wasn't a dream, really, but a sort of grinding thru a memory barrier. For some reason, right before I fell asleep, I tried to remember the name of the key French Situationist. Just a complete blank. I could see him, the famous photo of him smoking a cigar, but no name....

Re: Middle age health thread for fatties

Weep, o mortals, for I am menthol and cinnamon, I am Tiger Balm! It's the only ointment I've found that does a damn for sore muscles, and I decided my lower back needed it. The initial burn is nasty—like, a good 7 or 8 minutes—but then it loosens things up beautifully.

What you guys suggest is the stuff of nightmares. I'd wake up screaming, not applauding. Well, aren't you hoity-toity hard to please! Re: Beaner's and Rattie's Weather Porn Thread

Been out clearing snow for the last 2+ hours. It was about 15 inches deep in the low spots but had drifted 4-6 inches higher than my blower in a few places. For the deep stuff I had to work the blower up and down and chew away at it pac-man style. It was slow going, and not as light and fluffy as i...

Re: Beaner's and Rattie's Weather Porn Thread

Hoo doggies, back from Round 2. I would have been doomed without the snowblower. There'll be one more round this evening after it stops, but I think we're past the worst of it. Been out clearing snow for the last 2+ hours. It was about 15 inches deep in the low spots but had drifted 4-6 inches high...

Re: Beaner's and Rattie's Weather Porn Thread

An announcement: I've got a lower back strain, on the right. Now that the shovelling is complete, my body has reminded me that I'm old. I'm sitting with a heating pad right now. Hopefully you've already trained the Mrs. in how to operate a snow shovel, so rest up and get better soon. She has only r...
