Noticed this in George F. Kennan: An American Life by John Lewis Gaddis: Seated at Kennan's table while Gorbachev spoke was "a lady of most striking appearance, who chain-smoked Danish cigars and appeared to be rather bored with the whole performance.... I was later told that I should have recogniz...

I've had so many clash fantasies crushed - please don't tarnish Terry's tough guy image!

Re: New! rare Joe footage

just sounds like drunk people who don't know each other talking about stuff and having some laughs. real down to earth testing political boundaries... cracking jokes. listening to Buena Vista Social Club... "Belgium is the capital of Europe! how'd that happen?!?!" though - agree with Briggs and Mupp...

Re: The Big Pink Book

I read somewhere that Topper himself said he wasn't looking forward to it but when his copy arrived he thought it was a nice thing to have. It's pretty much Westway to the World in a coffee table book. I found mine real cheap too, looked at it for a little while and now I can count the number of tim...

New to us? http://www.punktorrents.com/thread-139807.html that's Dan's video. no, it's been in circulation for a long time. Thanks for link - I was there - in the front row! It looks and sounds good. yeah, it sounds awesome! a great recording of a rock art show. the good audio one is from this vide...

Re: The Clash observations thread.

I listened to Combat Rock on a run on Saturday and Red Angel Dragnet-Straight to Hell-Overpowered run has to be the most qualitatively jarring in the Clash's oeuvre. Kind of a shit sandwich in reverse. Both RAD and OBF are killed by Joe's terrible, uninspired lyrics and the awful vocal performances...

Re: RSD

Flex can likely best speak to this, but aren't the intended primary beneficiaries of RSD the retailers? It's about getting asses in the shops to generate sales, not satisfying every customer. One could also argue that the eBay profiteers are providing a valuable service to those who were unable to ...

Re: Thatcher dead.

Don't believe I've listened to Burning London yet, and if I did I probably skipped over it. It isn't very good. I like Radio Clash, the rest is either very bad or ordinary. The cover of London's Burning is one of the most wretched things I've ever heard. I remember being disappointed when I read th...

Re: stuff you're supposed to like...

I maintain that BAD is hard to like on record. The reunion tour thoroughly converted me when it came to the actual songs , but I never could get past how dated the records seemed when I was 17 or whatever. when I first heard BAD when I was about 17 or so I thought it was god awful - and This is BAD...

Re: Sound System

OK, but none of the London Calling digital deliveries sounds nearly as good and warm and round as the original UK vinyl pressing, which could be blasted at top volume. I know that sounds like Steve Hoffman-esque stuff but this time it's true. The best digital sound for half the album is on the orig...

Re: Sound System

(What Inder doesn't know is that a friend switched the cables and he was, in fact, listening to Abbey Road .) CtC sounds like it was actually made in the road itself. Secret to Clash records: play them loud. Cut the Crap sounds like Abbey Road when blasted through some high-quality monitors....
