Re: Why were BAD not commercially successful?

Well…. BAD went through a load of US label vs.UK label issues, being a UK band signed directly to the US label. The UK label was always holding out for a Clash reunion, as they owned that contract directly . They were misled by someone involved (mot telling who) to blame Mick for this. Then, after ...

Re: Video: Joe Strummer on Portobello Road in 1990

Thanks for that. So, 1988 not 1990? You're welcome. Yeah, I mean, that's what the guy's got in the heading, and in the description copy -- so I'm assuming he has the date right, though you can't always, of course. Anyway, it's a nifty little clip, in light of the subject matter, especially. Judging...

Re: Video: Joe Strummer on Portobello Road in 1990

Here's another clip from the same source, with Joe getting the first 45 or so seconds:

I'm curious what Portobello Pirate TV was. Some type of local access thing? Don't know how works in the UK, but I'd love to hear the full scoop on that.

Re: Why were BAD not commercially successful?

I don't know if anyone saw the Adam Curtis 'Can't Get You out of My Head' series on the BBC, but one of the episodes was called 'What If the People Are Stupid?' A lot (most) of the best music isn't commercially successful. But then BAD had the backing of a major label and were fronted by a 'name'? ...

Re: Why were BAD not commercially successful?

Sorry to be late to this but I think you have to put it in context. Not too many examples of second bands formed by the lead guitar player of a successful band have ever gone anywhere or had any particular staying power (obviously there are exceptions). In that context, BAD did very well compared t...

Re: Why didn't Mickey Gallagher return for the Sandinista! tour?

Didn't the legal stuff with Norman and Mickey come later? Possibly around the time of Story of the Clash? I remember something along those lines, too, that they ended up taking action, and that's how their names ended up added to "Magnificent Seven" -- whose creation is well-documented, of course. ...

Re: Why did B.A.D. "disband"?

Teddy said the idea was that it was the sequel, I think. Or maybe it was Mick that said it at the time? I can't remember. I wish they'd been something else. But that's another discussion, I think the idea was to draw a line from the past, as in, "That was the old band, this is the new one." At leas...

Re: Why did B.A.D. "disband"?

I was pleased to learn that Subterania had opened as a venue again. Yeah, it's a cool place. Loved the ambience, and I thought the sound there was excellent, which can be hit or miss in a nightclub setting like that. I'll always have great memories of BAD's four-night stand there, because right aft...

Re: Why did B.A.D. "disband"?

It was happening at the time. Mick came on expressing excitement about seeing it on the news. I remember him saying that at Subterania, on the fourth night of that run they did there: "I've just been watching the news, seeing what's going down in Romania, and I'm wondering what Mrs. T must be think...

Re: Earthquake Weather LP

Wow, some if it looks a bit better on the page, than what I heard -- or, at least, what I thought I heard back then. I don't think I'd have made out all of those lines, myself. Though I kind of wish that Joe (or whoever decided the final tracklist) could have made room for LA Turnpike and/or Plymout...

Re: Detroit 5 May 1984

It's been up a couple of days in the 'Remasters" thread mate. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=11166&start=2025 So I see, yeah -- but I've been immersed in my "rent money party" stuff, as I call it. Now that I've got a bit of downtime, I can actually do something about it, like download it. Which that...

Re: Detroit 5 May 1984

I'm currently remastering this. Will upload again later today. Look forward to hearing that! I've never seen either of those Detroit shows on anybody's list, so it's cool to see it pop up at last. From what I can see, and recollect -- this being 30-odd years ago -- the setlist seems pretty similar ...

Re: Earthquake Weather LP

Gangsterville is one of my favorite tracks on Earthquake Weather. I liked the tempo changes when I first heard it. Two of my favorite bands around 1989 (The Fall, Salem 66) had a some songs with similar arrangements. I do think Zanders guitar solo is too busy though. Agreed, although I don't think ...

Re: Unreleased working mix of Stay Free

Amazing find! Listening to these, pre-guitar overdubs, makes for an intimate experience, especially on the coda of All The Young Punks, which I never could make out, back in the day -- but I had lots of fun trying! Hopefully, we get to hear more of these somewhere down the line.

Re: UDA Letter

The Undertones wrote Whizz Kids supposedly about SLF and has to be said it's a not very flattering portrait. I think the problem was the Undertones felt they were being pigeonholed by the UK media as a troubles band, with all the stereotypes and cliches that followed, and wanted to break out of tha...
