Two Festhalle '84 Concert Reviews (Translated): Now On Mohawk's Revenge FB Page

Heads up to everybody: I have posted two concert reviews from the Bern '84 gig on the Mohawk's Revenge Facebook page. I'll be glad to do it here, if everybody wants, but I figure you can just as easily head there, and see what they're all about. Both are post- gig reviews, one from the Berner Zeitun...

Re: Don Letts solo Album coming soon

Everything Terry got involved with has merit. One of my favorite lyricists, and a massive influence on me -- similar to Joe, in is ability to paint a detailed picture in only a few lines, as we see in FBS songs like The Things We Do, or The Farmyard Connection ("They smoked all the joints, but they...

Re: New clash song (kinda) By myself

So i made this and i really dont know what to make of it... Tell me your thoughts Thanks for listening No worries! Being a collage guy myself, both on the visual and musical side, I enjoyed this immensely -- the songs seemed to fit well together. Call it Clash City Cut 'n' Paste, or Clash City Coll...

Re: The Clash at Live Aid or Band-Aid?

I think that's the situation, in a nutshell. Clash 2 were from the outset regarded as a, to be polite, 'cult/ fanbase fuelled' outfit, certainly in the UK, despite their ability to tour and still sell tickets. It wasn't The Clash, and lots of their long-term fans - and influential music press types...

Chairman Ralph wrote: ↑11 Jul 2023, 6:50am That the Clash were playing some obscure festival in Brittany on the day of the world's biggest one says it all, in terms of where their stock stood at the time. Which could be admirable or principled or whatever if they were Black Flag or Dead Kennedys or...

Re: The Clash at Live Aid or Band-Aid?

Geldof was mates with the Pistols and Bob saw Rotten as the real deal and Joe a bit of a fake. But I don't really think it was truly hatred. They simply didn't like each others music very much. It stems from the Rats being really great musicians and not getting any credibility from the press for no...

Re: Cut The Crap songs vs. This is Big Audio Dynamite songs (Album + B sides)

I think it's interesting that no one really talks about BAD anymore but lots of people still talk about CTC. Is it the power of the brand name or is just a more interesting story (or soap opera)? Or maybe CTC is an Eighties nostalgia thing in a more recognizable way? BAD is extremely Eighties but i...

Re: Cut The Crap songs vs. This is Big Audio Dynamite songs (Album + B sides)

I also wonder, why did CBS sit on the record for 8 months before they released it? Was there additional mixing happening over the summer? I would have thought CBS would have been keen on getting the LP out asap. I do wonder if CBS was weighing on rejecting the mix or just shelving it outright and s...

Re: Cut The Crap songs vs. This is Big Audio Dynamite songs (Album + B sides)

Trevor Horn maybe as he did the production work for Malcolm. But one other that's overlooked is Robin Scott who had a huge hit with his band M and the song "Pop Muzik". Number one in 1979. Robin was at art college with Malcolm. Bernie would've definitely have been aware of Robin. Robin had been inv...

Re: Cut The Crap songs vs. This is Big Audio Dynamite songs (Album + B sides)

Bernie was interested in commercial success, and I think that was generally Bernie's greatest asset. It was also his job. Any populist or anti-establishment gimmick The Clash cooked up was meant to drive record/ticket sales, the Bonds residency, the US Fest press conferences, the "disappearing Joe"...

Re: Cut The Crap songs vs. This is Big Audio Dynamite songs (Album + B sides)

Yep a bad idea is just a bad idea. The end results of those sessions only diluted any chance The Clash had for continuing as a band. Seriously how the fuck do you follow Cut The Crap based on the principle of making a better record each time. Joe could've recorded himself singing Dean Martin songs ...

Re: Cut The Crap songs vs. This is Big Audio Dynamite songs (Album + B sides)

My comment was a bit glib to be fair. I take the point about the intent of the song and, being charitable, I'd concede it maybe wasn't all that terrible but when the execution is so lamentable, it effectively makes it a moot point for me. Oh, no, I get what you're saying, totally. I personally alwa...

Re: Cut The Crap songs vs. This is Big Audio Dynamite songs (Album + B sides)

I remember reading that line and thinking it interesting, but also that i wasnt sure it actually made it any better quite frankly. Bernie would have so loved the sheer chutzpah of it that you'd soon have been co-opted into the band itself. After all, no member of the group was indispensable as he'd...

Re: Cut The Crap songs vs. This is Big Audio Dynamite songs (Album + B sides)

Well Bernie did at least. The title was of course his idea taken from the movie Mad Max II. But would it have fared any better with its original title of "Out Of Control"? Or how much mincemeat would reviewers have made if they'd gone with, say, We Are The Clash? Imagine how much fun they'd all hav...

Re: Cut The Crap songs vs. This is Big Audio Dynamite songs (Album + B sides)

None of the songs would've sounded the way they do if Mick had stayed in the band. I've also got doubts about them using drum machines. They would sound very different. Late to the party, as usual, but now that I've joined this one -- I agree. If Mick had been there still, they wouldn't have tried ...
