Re: The *ugh* 2024 US Election Thread

Good job by Harris tonight. She was the clear winner. Trump sounded like an angry old man. Agreed. She obliterated him. And the abortion section may actually move the needle a point or two for her. We were all smiles here as the debate was wrapping up. PXL_20240911_024237748_exported_0_172602257675...

Re: The *ugh* 2024 US Election Thread

It was unspeakably cathartic to finally FINALLY watch someone on stage with the wits to take advantage of what a fucking moron Trump is.

Re: The Dictator observations thread.

https://archive.ph/qPQWB This is a book review done right. It's interaction with the author and their work, not a simple thumbs up or down, but discourse. And it makes me want to read the book with his critique in mind. Great, fascinating read. I probably won't read the book but I'll be curious abo...

Re: The *ugh* 2024 US Election Thread

My partner got worked up last night after reading Nate Silver's prediction that Trump was going to win by a large margin. My philosophy as of late has been to mimic Han Solo: never tell me the odds, so I didn't have much perspective / knowledge to calm her down. I did finally dig into it and found ...

Re: The *ugh* 2024 US Election Thread

I think the debate will be basically fine. They don't usually move the needle much but a) with the race so tight, even a marginal change in voter preference will likely matter, b) unlike usual, this will be one of the first opportunities for a lot of likely voters to actually hear from one of the tw...

Re: The *ugh* 2024 US Election Thread

Bill Scher (progressive political writer who is sometimes hated on the Left social medias for being, well, not a leftist but who I find does a pretty good job analyzing the X's and O's of the daily grind) has been banging on about this issue for a while now. If anything I think the Semafor article ...

Re: The *ugh* 2024 US Election Thread

I think the kind of voter who may need a permission structure to vote for Harris got it from Liz Cheney. Few that those may be.

Re: The IMCT Media Criticism Thread

https://www.salon.com/2024/09/06/nate-silver-faces-backlash-for-pro-model-skewing/ An additional happy outcome of this election would be Silver's rep disappearing into a black hole. I'm moderately embarrassed to remember a time when I sort of admired the guy - bringing moneyball to politics and suc...

Re: I need a good boffin.

If it's true that some significant portion of 18 year olds has never had cause to digitally transfer a file in their lives, I guess that speaks to how rapidly tech is obliterating old skills. I also may be figuring wrong on when they'd start using technology on the reg (in or outside the classroom)....
