Re: Essayist to the slaughter
You lost me at vicissitudes. No offense is intended, of course. You lost me around your second post. No offense/etc. Don't kill the messenger, mate, it's just not a word you run into very often. Plus the title of the thread is essayist to the slaughter. If he wanted us to blow wind up his skirt, ma...

Re: Essayist to the slaughter
@ Dr. Medula, that's a really interesting take; I like it. If I understand correctly, you're saying that a band's sensibility emerges much like personality does in an individual, and that this is an interactive process with the fan. Not a point I was making consciously, but it definitely works. As ...

@ Heston & Wolter, of course GEER is better than Combat Rock @ Jenny B, I assume anyone with a "Cigarettes & Toads" quote in their sig has watched my brilliant "Wed Viggo" video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLht516d91o ). @ Dr. Medula, that's a really interesting take; I like it. My (maybe too) personal reflections on Clash fanaticism went live on PopMatters this morning:

I love that Minstrel Boy too, but for me, the best post-Clash tune is Get Down Moses

Re: Clash songs similar to others artist`songs
Maybe this belongs on Capital Radio, but watching War perform "Why Can't We Be Friends?" just made my week. One of the few bands that can take me out almost like the Clash does. Oh, and also got chills from the Bond's performance of "Broadway." I'm a native NYer who left in 1986, and they really suc...

Re: Ass-Ass Inations
I really only meant to highlight the contradiction between venerating the constitution and unalloyed skepticism toward the federal government. Guess I better hit the history books ... or just go back and hang out the Last Gang forum

Re: Ass-Ass Inations
Thanks for reading and offering such a thoughtful response. The Ed Kilgore article from The New Republic that I linked to may be helpful with this quandary. His piece connects the dots to the strains of American history and political culture that make these propositions toxic. In short, suspicion to...
