Re: You Fucked Up the Easiest Part: The Terrible Band Names Thread

New Radicals. Apart from producing one of the worst songs of that terrible decade, that band name is inane. It sounds like a focus group compromise. I'd add a lot of "New ____ " names to the list. New Order, New Edition, New Pornographers. Probably a few more. It just feels lazy. The New Originals ...

Re: Bands Whos Later Stuff You Prefer

World Circuit Records has given second life to a heap of aging musicians from across the globe and I generally prefer all of their latter day works for that label. Orchestra Baobab, Ali Farka Toure, Toumani Diabate, Ibrahim Ferrer and the entire Buena Vista Social Club network, among others. I'm tem...

Re: RIP Terry Hall

There's a live version of Stereotypes I came across recently that is more in line with their ska sound.

Re: RIP Terry Hall

Great clips -- great quality! And, of course, you can't beat those songs, though I think they were still finding ways to stay relevant. I loved their reworking of Prince Buster's Ten Commandments -- that was truly an inspired stroke! So was their last album, Protest Songs: 1924-2012 . Here are some...

Re: Combat Rock 40th anniversary reissue coming soon?

Not sure if shared before but a 2022 interview with Glyn Johns about Combat Rock can be read here... https://thenewcue.substack.com/p/the-new-cue-160-may-16-40-years-of-844 "Bernie Rhodes wanted to chop guitarist Mick Jones’ mix into something less unwieldy." Yes but Bernie you're the manager so sh...

Re: Favourite Strummer lyric?

I wish I was a helmsman
On a clipper bound for the Spanish main
Breathing fancy breezes
Gold Jamaican sugar cane

It really couple be any random stanza from any of the three Walker tracks he sings on. I really love what he was going for on those tunes. So wistful and evocative.

Re: The Clash II - Joe Strummer Interview

Three words - The Spliff Bunker I have no doubt the use of cannabis fuelled Joe's writing sessions. It was definitely part of his process. The degree to which it affected the words he put on the page is less clear. Hmmm. His deep thinking and occasional word soup is classic stoner material to me. W...

Re: The Clash II - Joe Strummer Interview

It's an interesting question as to whether drugs enhanced the Clash's music or not. I tend to lean towards the belief that drugs don't actually boost creativity much if at all. Regarding S!, I don't think drugs led the band to experiment with marimbas, steel drums, ambience, etc, but maybe drugs did...

Re: New films?

I've just found a Spanish documentary about Joe's time in Spain titled Quiero Tener Una Ferretería En Andalucía Unfortunately I've only found it available on Amazon and so regretfully I've had to give that cunt Bezos some of my hard earned....it looks very interesting. Anyone else ever heard of it?...

Re: 20 years today

I didn't have much to say yesterday but did come by to read everyone's thoughts (which were nice). I was a teenager when Joe died and was completely smitten by Global A Go Go at the time. It was so fresh and full of life and completely unlike anything I had ever heard (I hadn't yet heard Sandinista)...

Re: Don Letts' Culture Clash Radio - Crucial Strummer

For those who haven't clicked, the Strummer songs he played were:

At the Border, Guy
Gangsterville
All in a Day
Midnight Jam
Willesden to Cricklewood

Kind of a random cross-section.

Re: RIP Terry Hall

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aggLrSglbI8 When my kids were younger, they watched a lot of the Wiggles, and this was always one of their favorites. It led, of course, to me playing the Specials for them and while they did not become fans (yet), I'm glad it's something they've been exposed to. Lol...
