Re: Something About England

Seconded, always one of my favorites from SANDINISTA!, particularly for the vocal interplay, as several folks here have already said. Too bad they never attempted it live. I have no problem with the versions of "Street Parade" that I've heard, but as for "Corner Soul," well...I remember making a com...

Re: You know what?

Hey. Eumaas, I appreciate your thoughtful response. And I want to assure you, I wasn't insulted by anything you said. (Or what anybody else has said here, for that matter.) I don't take myself quite that seriously! As Ace Frehley said, "It's rock 'n' roll, not the Spanish Inquisition!" Tho...

Re: You know what?

But it was also working in idioms they were familiar with. My main beef is that they could have worked out the later material into something truly special (which to me most of it was live), but they simply exhausted themselves trying to bowl everyone over with their prolificness. Perhaps, but I per...

Re: You know what?

If they were so eclectic, why weren't they onstage? Answer: it was all a contrivance. Live and studio work are completely different games, as you well know. In the UK and Europe, the setlists were always a bit diversified; in America, a little more straightforward. I don't see anything contrived in...

Re: You know what?

Agreed: as I've said here before -- had the Clash made London Calling, Parts 1-10 , like so many rock critics seemed to want (especially over here), the story would have ended a lot sooner. And that's why so much contemporary music is as boring as the furrow that its practitioners are so stolidly pl...

Re: You know what?

Unison singing not sung in harmony never works acapella.
Admirable thought, but we're not talking about the Four Seasons here, exactly, are we? I mean, this is [/i the album where a children's chorus gets their turn at bat, among all those special guests, soooo....

Re: You know what?

I've played Midnight Log a couple of times live, so I'm fine with it, too. And Look Here is fun, as relaxed as the boys sounded during this period.

Re: Favorite song off any Bootleg

Agreed on both counts: Police & Thieves from Stockholm (2-17-84) is one of my favorite versions from that era -- as intense as it gets. There's quite a few good versions of Mag 7 kicking around -- the high-speed rendition from Down At The Casbah Club happens to be one of my faves, though.

Re: Favorite song off any Bootleg

While we're talking about that era: This Is England, The Expo, Portland, ME (4-12-84): another one brought to you by Grungy Back Pocket Job Productions...soundwise...but I still pull it out from time to time.

Re: Favorite song off any Bootleg

Yeah, Kent State is one of the more interesting shows from that tour, and the "gun"-related songs played that night ("The Guns of Brixton," "Tommy Gun," "Police On My Back") take on a different context in light of the students who were killed there -- the atmosphere definitely matched the music.

Re: Favorite song off any Bootleg

So many choices, but, off the top of my head...I'd nominate: Remote Control: Manchester 5-8-77 London Calling: NY Palladium '79 Armagideon Time: Hammersmith Odeon, 6-17-80 One More TIme: Stockholm: 5-16-81 Somebody Got Murdered: Casbah Club LP Junco Partner: 5-16-84 (Grungy as hell audience tape, an...

Re: Bernie/Bananarama

Actually, the girls DID have the Pistols backline behind 'em, albeit briefly, and one-quarter of it -- specifically, in Paul Cook, who produced their first single, and also drummed for them during the mid-'90s. For other relevant info, check out this link: http://www.cookandjones.co.uk/Bananarama.htm.

Re: I really want a Clash shirt.

Thanks. These are all works in progress (as I took my original two-parter on T-shirts, and combined it into one, dropping a couple irrelevant paragraphs as I went)...snapshots of what the work might look like, while I sort out the overall approach, and tone. As a general policy, I will post newer en...

Re: I really want a Clash shirt.

Just so everybody knows, my previous website posts on this subject are now here: http://chairmanralph.com/clashbookdispatches/. Each entry allows me only eight photos per post, so I had to drop a couple, but I'm sure they'll resurface again (if only as eye candy for other posts). Happy reading as th...

Re: Mick in Atlanta this Saturday the 8th?

Kosmo has produced several Atlanta-area acts: notably, Jack Logan (whom I wrote about and interviewed way back in '95-'95-ish, or thereabouts), and Drivin 'N' Cryin' -- hence, the confusion. I never knew him to be living anywhere else but New York.
