October 1980, if my memory serves...
I remember the discussions:
"are you sure this is a movie about The Clash?" (first 15 minutes)
"where's Joe's guitar?"(Police and Thieves)
"This mix of Rudie Can't Fail I've never heard..."

Can't remember the date but from recollection me and my mate travelled up to London to see it on first theatrical release at The Prince Charles Cinema in Soho / Chinatown.

Cool. It's now a concert venue:

I think there was also a screening of RB @ Wheeler Auditorium on the UC Berkeley campus, circa 1980.

I saw it when it was released in North America, three times in one week, at the Varsity Theater on the University of Minnesota campus. 1980 I guess. I'd just moved out and quit high school at 16, rented an $80 a month common rooming house above the Paul Robeson Bookstore, on my dish washing job at Curran's restaurant (can't make this stuff up), and the Varsity was literally out my front door and across the street.

In March of '08 I saw Carbon/Silicon there (it's now a fine concert venue) and met the band walking right in front of us as we were looking for parking.

I still think it's a grand filum (despite being rather boring in parts), as it shows the dichotomy between how deathly dull and down-pressing (as they'd say in Kingston 11) everything was in London/the UK vs. how exciting this one little rock n' roll band was.

I can't recall it ever being on telly in the past, but it may well have aired as you say on some late night slot.
But.... It was actually on TV last week - part of London Live's 'Punk week' (London Live as the name suggests is London's 'local' TV channel - part of the media empire of Evgeny Lebedev who owns the London Evening Standard. It's a pretty low budget set-up with some live news coverage but padded out with old archive films and TV shows often with a London theme)
I hadn't watched it for years - even though I have the DVD - and it was good fun to see it again. Flawed, but it has some dynamite footage.

Yes, it has been on a few times. I had it recorded for a while before I got the DVD

I saw it at the Vic, on Victoria Road, in Dundee, when it came out. I was there with my girlfriend, and one of her pals turned up with a mate of mine who was a DJ, but shy away from the record decks. A queue of would-be punks was lining up, but an older bloke in a decidedly dodgy raincoat was there, wondering what the fuck we were all doing. The Vic was on it's knees at the time, and mostly showing third-rate pornos (it all changed a year later, but that's another story for another setting), and he must have seen the 'Rude' in the title and the X certificate and thought he was in for a memorable night. I'd loved to have seen his face as it dawned on him.

I bet he left just before Ray's blow job scene.

I wish *I'd* left just before Ray's blow job scene.
There should be an option on the DVD to watch the film while skipping that 'key insight'...
